"Hailing from Los Angeles, Colored Shadows first formed in November 2004. They debut... with the Colored Shadows EP, a thoughtful collection submerged in cinematic orchestration and musical nuance. Colored Shadows mingle the subtle influence of artists like Air, David Bowie and The Velvet Underground with their own complex writing to create songs that are as elaborate as they are beautiful.
This debut release packs a unique, sophisticated sound that lures with accessibility, but sustains with musical and lyrical depth." --Dave Radford, Nice Promotion
"Combining the analog pop of Air's Moon Safari and the moodiness of Low-era Bowie, this little EP scores big with a huge sound and great songs. Best local debut of the year" --Ed Stafford, KSCR, Los Angeles
"Taking the Pink Floyd meets ELO meets the Doves route, Colored Shadows use sparse arrangements, pianos, vocoders, and quiet vocals to create their brand of epic tripped out pop.
The four songs on their debut EP, Colored Shadows are so incredibly airy and subdued that they float by on a cloud. The songs have a spacey and weightless feel leaving one to wonder how they can remain so grounded. "Moscow" and "July," for example, are such breezy, towering songs with doses of ELO-ish pop psyche Doves-like expansiveness that they simply seem unearthly.
Perhaps the best tune on Colored Shadows is the EP's final song, "Rose Colour." At over eight minutes, it is the EP's magnum opus and a culmination of every influence and idea Colored Shadows utilized in the record's three previous songs. Starting out with a bit of robotic vocoding from beyond the song then develops into a much more grounded and accessible tune centered on a loopy keyboard riff and whispered vocals. It's so big and lofty that eight minutes is barely enough time to contain it! This is the best song that Radiohead, the Doves, or even Air never wrote. Yes, it's that good.
Colored Shadows clearly do not reside on Earth. Their debut EP is filled with masterful, ethereal tunes that come from a place where only Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawkins know. One hopes that no one else ever finds that spot!" --Paul Zimmerman, First Coast News
