The Boston Terrier And All About It
The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds of dog who are truly American, originating on the Eastern seaboard, his ancestry is the British Bulldog and the White English Terrier. The first cross was bred in 1865 and the Boston Terrier Club of America was formed in 1891; the Boston Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893 and made his first appearance in the UK in the 1920s.
The Boston Terrier was the project of a group of dog fanciers who worked in livery stables in Boston and it is likely that he was originally developed for dog-fighting; selective breeding creating the rather more refined dog we are now familiar with. He is a good tempered dog, makes a very good house-dog and enjoys his exercise. He is either brindle with white markings or black with white markings and the Breed Standard describes the ideal distribution of the white in the coat. Brindles are preferred and the brindle should be even and distinct.
