Derek Jones is a singer/songwriter from Canada’s National Capital Region who has been writing and performing his own original music and lyrics for over a decade. Following the success of his first band On The Edge, and his first solo CD, “Hobo Phenomenon”, Derek has recently completed his new CD release, “Awakening”, containing 12 new original songs. His artistic blend of guitar and vocals creates a unique sound, which has been described as a mix between folk, adult contemporary and pop/rock. Derek is well know for both his intimate solo concerts and his energetic live full-band performances; he is also well known for organizing and performing at benefit concerts to support causes that he believes in.
Biography:
1999 to present
- During this period, Derek has been wrote and performed as a solo artist under the name Derek Jones.
- Over the past year, Derek has focused his full attention on writing, producing, and recording his original music for his new solo CD, “Awakening”, which will be released in August 2004
- In 2001/2002, Derek completed a demo compilation of original material entitled “The Roads Were Long…Live”, which showcases new original music recorded at various live performances and pre-production recording sessions
- In 1999, Derek completed his first solo CD entitled “Hobo Phenomenon”, which sold over 350 copies at local performances. Co-produced and recorded by Derek himself, Hobo Phenomenon contains a unique musical arrangement of vocals, acoustic guitar, and bass guitar
- Throughout this period, Derek has always used his musical talents to help raise money and food for local charities through organizing, and performing at benefit concerts as well as donating a percentage of CD sales to various causes
1996 to 1999
- Derek formed an acoustical duo called Günther and Quinn, which was well known on the Ottawa circuit where they frequently performed at various local establishments.
- Günther and Quinn engaged in volunteer work performing to raise money and food for various causes
- During this period, Derek was also lead singer and guitar player for the Mattawa-based just-for-fun rock band called Beaver, who had the opportunity to open for such acts as Trooper, Toronto, and other well-known artists
1988 to 1996
Derek was the bandleader of the successful Ottawa-based rock group On The Edge. As lead songwriter, guitar player, and vocalist for the group, he played key role in the following set of accomplishments:
- On The Edge’s self-titled debut CD “On The Edge” sold over 3500 copies and crossed four broadcast formats (A/C, MOR, Rock and Country)
- Two professional self-produced and self-funded videos received regular airplay on Much Music, Musique Plus, Dan Gallagher’s Video Hits and YTV
- Song titled “The Beer Drinking Song” was featured in the Canadian movie Harmony Cats, directed by Sandy Wilson starring Canada’s own country sensation Lisa Brokop
- Song titled “In My Mind” played on regular rotation on Majic 100FM’s Night Majic program for a three-year period
- Song titled “In Your Touch” reached #1 on various Ottawa Valley radio station countdowns (Arnprior, Renfrew, Pembroke, and Fort Coulonge)
- On The Edge extensively toured regions of Ontario, Western Quebec, and Northern New York
- On The Edge performed for the Queen of England and the Prime Minister of Canada at a Canada Day celebration
- On The Edge engaged in volunteer work performing to raise money and food for various causes
