The prologue

Bystander: is it possible that every time you are at the piano you improvise?
Can’t you play anything from a score as everybody else does?

Ape: It’s not my fault! It’s my hands. They move alone.
I decide to do something, and they do something else: they don’t care!

Man: It’s not true! Don’t pay attention to her. It’s her, the monkey, who does what she wants, and it’s rude, too. It tried to make her think about it, but nothing, each word I said was vain.
Each time we play she pushes me down from the chair and wants to lead the game!

Bystander: well, you’d better come to an agreement, before it ends badly.

This album was meant to put an end to this conflict between the two primates.
Both compositions and improvisations have been given space: tracks 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 13 are compositions, the others are improvisations.
On the cover, who’s the author between the two?

Ian Lawrence Mistrorigo,
pianist, composer and improviser. He was born in London in 1971; he has studied piano and composition techniques with various teachers, including the maestro Fabio Vacchi.
He has given many highly successful concerts in renowned theatres and clubs, besides at international competitions and festivals both in Italy and abroad, such as the “Pianist’s Evening” during the “Vicenza Jazz Festival”, with the participation of Antonello Salis, Stefano Bollani e Kenny Werner.
He often performs as a soloist, playing and collaborating with various musicians and groups: Paolo Bressan, Lorenzo Pignattari, Hotel Rif, Gabriele Grotto, Gruppo Melodema, Massimo Simonini….
In piano recitals he prefers to improvise and this gives rise to a personal, intense style, which is closely linked to the traditions of western music and also to the role the improviser plays.
The fusion between a great variety of musical styles, such as classical, avant-garde, ethnic and jazz, is a major part of his artistic research, which is sometimes enhanced by the use of electronic equipment. In the “Meeting on keyboards” competition, he was awarded a special prize for his particular way of interpreting improvisation.
He has received important awards in famous festivals for setting silent films to music:
- 1st prize at the world selection of a pianist for the international “Silent Movie Days 2006” festival, in Pordenone/Sacile, which gave him the opportunity to perform at this festival (the most prestigious in the sector), setting the remake of Thomas H. Ince’s movie “The Bargain” 1914 to music for the first time ever, and to study with the best specialized pianists in this sector: Neil Brand, Gabriel Thibaudeau, Phil Carli, John Sweeney, Gunter A. Buchwald and Donald Sosin.
- “Ermitage” prize at the Bolzano International “Four FilmFestival 2006” for the film soundtrack “Joan the woman” by Cecil B. De Mille, USA 1917, 128’; the film, with its new soundtrack, will be published and sold on DVD by the “Ermitage Cinema” film production company.
3rd prize at selections and 2nd audience prize at the Aosta International “Strade del cinema” Festival 2005.
He has composed music for many different kinds of films, for the radio, TV and especially for the theatre with numerous successful plays, for instance: “Storia Ocarea” produced by “Glossa Teatro”.
He is often called to collaborate with different artists and companies for theatre, readings and multimedia performances, including: Pino Costalunga, Vitaliano Trevisan, Dedalo Furioso, Guillermo Horta, Oikeios…
He is artistic director of the live setting-to-music silent movie festival “Interpreters of Silence”, the same position held in the past edition of “Hanging Notes”. He has written some articles for the magazine “Music World” and he has been a judge in music competitions.
He has worked in recording studios as a phonic expert and arranger, improving his knowledge of modern technologies.
He works as a piano and musical composition teacher and above all collaborates with laboratories of music improvisation.
Critics have defined him a “pianist of great technical and expressive skills”.
With B.P. he has published the “Una settimana di novembre” and “Primates” CD for solo piano.
