The prologue

Bystander: is it possible that every time you are at the piano you improvise?
Canât you play anything from a score as everybody else does?

Ape: Itâs not my fault! Itâs my hands. They move alone.
I decide to do something, and they do something else: they donât care!

Man: Itâs not true! Donât pay attention to her. Itâs her, the monkey, who does what she wants, and itâs rude, too. It tried to make her think about it, but nothing, each word I said was vain.
Each time we play she pushes me down from the chair and wants to lead the game!

Bystander: well, youâd better come to an agreement, before it ends badly.

This album was meant to put an end to this conflict between the two primates.
Both compositions and improvisations have been given space: tracks 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 13 are compositions, the others are improvisations.
On the cover, whoâs the author between the two?

Ian Lawrence Mistrorigo,
pianist, composer and improviser. He was born in London in 1971; he has studied piano and composition techniques with various teachers, including the maestro Fabio Vacchi.
He has given many highly successful concerts in renowned theatres and clubs, besides at international competitions and festivals both in Italy and abroad, such as the âPianistâs Eveningâ during the âVicenza Jazz Festivalâ, with the participation of Antonello Salis, Stefano Bollani e Kenny Werner.
He often performs as a soloist, playing and collaborating with various musicians and groups: Paolo Bressan, Lorenzo Pignattari, Hotel Rif, Gabriele Grotto, Gruppo Melodema, Massimo Simoniniâ¦.
In piano recitals he prefers to improvise and this gives rise to a personal, intense style, which is closely linked to the traditions of western music and also to the role the improviser plays.
The fusion between a great variety of musical styles, such as classical, avant-garde, ethnic and jazz, is a major part of his artistic research, which is sometimes enhanced by the use of electronic equipment. In the âMeeting on keyboardsâ competition, he was awarded a special prize for his particular way of interpreting improvisation.
He has received important awards in famous festivals for setting silent films to music:
- 1st prize at the world selection of a pianist for the international âSilent Movie Days 2006â festival, in Pordenone/Sacile, which gave him the opportunity to perform at this festival (the most prestigious in the sector), setting the remake of Thomas H. Inceâs movie âThe Bargainâ 1914 to music for the first time ever, and to study with the best specialized pianists in this sector: Neil Brand, Gabriel Thibaudeau, Phil Carli, John Sweeney, Gunter A. Buchwald and Donald Sosin.
- âErmitageâ prize at the Bolzano International âFour FilmFestival 2006â for the film soundtrack âJoan the womanâ by Cecil B. De Mille, USA 1917, 128â; the film, with its new soundtrack, will be published and sold on DVD by the âErmitage Cinemaâ film production company.
3rd prize at selections and 2nd audience prize at the Aosta International âStrade del cinemaâ Festival 2005.
He has composed music for many different kinds of films, for the radio, TV and especially for the theatre with numerous successful plays, for instance: âStoria Ocareaâ produced by âGlossa Teatroâ.
He is often called to collaborate with different artists and companies for theatre, readings and multimedia performances, including: Pino Costalunga, Vitaliano Trevisan, Dedalo Furioso, Guillermo Horta, Oikeiosâ¦
He is artistic director of the live setting-to-music silent movie festival âInterpreters of Silenceâ, the same position held in the past edition of âHanging Notesâ. He has written some articles for the magazine âMusic Worldâ and he has been a judge in music competitions.
He has worked in recording studios as a phonic expert and arranger, improving his knowledge of modern technologies.
He works as a piano and musical composition teacher and above all collaborates with laboratories of music improvisation.
Critics have defined him a âpianist of great technical and expressive skillsâ.
With B.P. he has published the âUna settimana di novembreâ and âPrimatesâ CD for solo piano.
