Claudia Appling Williams, the rose in Montana Rose, deftly plays Patsy in âDear Patsyâ, and though her voice holds none of the truck stop throatiness of Clineâs, she interprets standards such as âWalking after Midnight,â âI Fall to Pieces,â â Sweet Dreamsâ and others with an erotic tenderness thatâs less country than it is late-night hip. Kenny Williams ditches the strings and Jordanaire-style back-ups of Owen Bradleyâs productions in favor of Claudiaâs vocal pyrotechnics and Rick Winkingâs multi-layered guitar work, which runs the gamut from rockabilly to Reinhardt to roadhouse swing.
Montana Rose has given us a classic. One could not ask for a finer tribute to Clineâs memory or to Montana Roseâs ever-expanding legacy.
