Tosi Poleri: “Canto Neruda”
(Suncave Productions, 2004)

CD
“Canto Neruda” is a live project with resulting CD sung by italian-american soprano Tosi Poleri. This project was created contemporarily among the centennial commemorations for the birth of Pablo Neruda (12 luglio 2004), produced by Suncave Productions (2004).
The CD is comprised of twelve tracks, (the thirteenth, “h-ombre”, a video clip by Andres Maldonado e Simona Baldelli) which highlights the extraordinary inheritance of Neruda’s odes, set to music by composers Eugenio Chabaneau (Argentina) and Ermanno Dodaro (Italia).
Food and sentiment are among the vital ingredients of life and of this musical project; the CD opens with the “Ode to the bed”, and continues to “nourish” us with the “Ode to the onion”, “Ode to the apple”, “Ode to the tomato”, “Ode to fried potatoes”, and with resolve, to the “Ode to life, “Ode to joy, to Enchanted Light, to a Happy Day and “Ode to hope”. A song to all the daily things in life telling many stories and hopefully relieving a part of mans hunger.
The rhythm of the poetic verse was the primary inspiration for the choice of the musical form, and so it follows; “Ode to the happy day”, a declaration in a lazy mood that befits a bolero; Ode to the apple has an ironically renaissance flavour, while the “Ode to the onion” is a quasi Argentine/rock rhythm. A taste of Latin music accompanies the “Ode to the tomato” in a Cumbia, and the “Ode to joy” proposes a continuous sort of samba…” even though there’s not too much emphasis placed on the philological side, because they’re only flavours.” says Tosi Poleri.
Behind the choices of odes dedicated to the fruits of the earth and to the small and greater things of life, we find a great spirituality, so much so as to have involved the voices of a group of Tibetan monks who just happened to be visiting…in two track of the CD.
Canto Neruda has been officially presented in a concert for Benetton’s Fabrica 1July at the Benetton foundation in Treviso, Italy, as part of the inauguration for which Fabrica created and dedicated an insert based on the Chilean poet. This insert is part of Colors magazine, exclusively in Italy for the August 4, 2004 edition. The 25 of October, the CD “Canto Neruda” will be newly released together with Passigli editor’s new presentation, of “Ode alla vita ed altri Odi Elementari”, one of many special editions in the centennial year for this offcial Italian editor of Neruda’s works.
The entire project has received full recognition and patronage from the Neruda Fondazione (Santiago del Chile), the Chilean Embassy in Rome, Italy, the city of Rome, and the RAI (Italian TV/ radio) as the only musical project dedicated among the numerous initiatives organized around the world to celebrate Neruda’s Centennial.
