Details:
About Tricky Dilemma: Bruce Mack invoked the interposition of Tricky Dilemma, after an emotionally inspired recording session with the group in 1999. The goal is to explore and mediate dilemmas caused by unspeakable human emotion, pain and desire through improvised music and the creation of sound spaces or escapes for audiences to work out or even forget their dilemma/s in. The style of music the band plays is improvised experimental -acoustic-electronica, created using a blend of acoustic and electronic instruments with added effects. Although often performing as a trio, the group is a quartet featuring Muata25 AKA Thomas ''Blast'' Murray (Afrofraktal guitar, feedback and rhythm), Marvin Sewell (Electric, lead, rhythm and Bouzouki guitars), Val-Inc (Turntable, sampler, and percussion…), and Bruce Mack (percussion, synthesizer and voice). The band''s collective musical influences are broad, ranging from folk music of Western Africa and Haiti to Persian Sufi Music and the Rebetika music of Greece. This caravan is not without the influence of artists such as 70''s era Miles Davis, Brian Eno, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Taj Mahal to name a few. Tricky Dilemma''s live show is mystic, sensual and as described by an audience member "enchanting". Tricky Dilemma formed in the fall of 1999, when Mack, Sewell and Thomas got together to record improvised music at Full Tilt Studios in NYC. Until recently, the band limited its performances to Art Gallery audiences in lower Manhattan. Now, in support of their recently released debut CD "The Howling Necessity" on Trugroid Records (December 2003), Tricky Dilemma is touring and opening shows for Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber. A recent reviewer said about "The Howling Necessity" "…a marvelous blend of spacey, exotic, cosmic, funky, psyche, jazz, rock. I dig the layers of guitars…when the sampler and guitar (s) explodes on "Swagger''s Milk", the layers of mutating textures erupt with kaleidoscopic swirling patterns. The vibe here is one of strict mood enhancement." (Downtown Music Gallery, New York, NY,) Individually the members of TD have extensive international touring and work experience - Marvin Sewell (Cassandra Wilson, David Sandborn, and Jack DeJohnette), Thomas ''Blast'' Murray (Eurhythmics, Terrence Trent D''Arby, Tom Tom Club), Val-Inc (Geri Allen, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith), and Bruce Mack (Cooper-Moore, Risa Jaraslow Dance Company, and Burnt Sugar). The group and concept is held together by the chemistry of Mack and Sewell who have been working together since the early 90''s in the Punk-Funk-R&B-Rock bands PBR Streetgang and Rebels Be Phuncky. In recent years Mack & Sewell have collaborated on music for television resulting in several compositions chosen for spots on Channel Thirteen.
