The Akkademiks are brought to you by Dr. Rawk, AKA âDoc Rock.â You may have seen him around, calculating the 79th digit of Ï, if you go to school at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Doc Rock was joined on some tracks by Dr.âs Zaius and Zhivago, on guitar and drums, respectively.
Several years ago, as Dr. Rawk was trying to help one of his students study for an Anthropology final at SIUC, he couldn't help but notice that the student struggled to memorize terms in the class, but recited the lyrics to the songs he listened to while he studied. Dr. Rawk suggested that perhaps if the Anthropology terms were made into a song, it might be easier to remember for the student.
Later that night, in Dr. Rawk's home studio, he created the "The Anthropology Song," the first in a long series of musical experiments, designed to help students learn and remember specific vocabulary or events. The next day, the student gladly took the recording, and promised to listen to it. Within a week, he claimed that listening to it really helped him remember the terms he was struggling with. He did well on the final, and passed the class. He said, Doc Rawk, you....ROCK!" and thus newly christened was the good doctor.
Doc Rock knew that applying music to an educational purpose was not a new concept, but it wasn't done at this level of education, right? That was the conventional wisdom. Thank goodness Doc Rock is not conventional.
Not long after the anecdotal success of the Anthropology Song, Doc Rock actively began to create this project, called "The Akkademiks....ROCK!" He focused on SIUC's introductory Geology course as his subject matter because he himself was an amateur rock hound, and the intro to Geology course was a core curriculum course at SIUC that a lot of students had to take. He recruited some like-minded academics, Dr.'s Zaius and Zhivago, and "The Akkademiks" were born.
The testing ground for this musical project was The Clinical Center Achieve Program at SIUC, a program dedicated to providing academic accommodations to students with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders. You can find out more about the Achieve Program on their website, https://www.tradebit.com or by contacting the good doctor himself at [email protected]://www.tradebit.com.
Don't tell me you aren't even a little intrigued? Go ahead, listen to some of the songs. You might find you like "rock" music from a whole new perspective.
