Seventy bucks is a steep price to pay for a copy of 'Penthouse' magazine, but it's the price a twelve-year-old Pheroze Karai commanded for them in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. "I really wanted a guitar, and porn was illegal over there, so it just made sense to take advantage of the horny local kids there. In retrospect, probably not the greatest thing to do in a country that punishes that kind of stuff by cutting off people's dicks"
Born in London, England to Zoroastrian parents, Pheroze's childhood was divided between the rigid fundamentalism of Saudi Arabia where his parents worked and the abundant sights, smells, and sounds of India where his grandparents lived. The various cultural immersions lend a naturally distinctive worldly inflection to his voice. "I grew up with the whole Bollywood scene at the same time as my mother was blasting Prince, Black Sabbath, and Queen in the house. Freddie Mercury was a fellow Zoroastrian, so she was hell-bent on him being part of my upbringing".
Getting a guitar wasn't Pheroze's only musically related brush with Riyadh's infamous 'Chop-Chop Square'. Beyond his nether-regions, he also risked losing his hand at the age of eleven when he and a friend, attracted by the cover art, shoplifted a couple of cassette tapes. One of these acquisitions turned out to be 'Badmotorfinger' by Soundgarden - the album Pheroze credits with kick starting his musical development.
Pheroze moved to the U.S. in 1993 when, due to the lack of education past the 9th grade in Saudi Arabia, he was shipped off to boarding school in Connecticut. The school threatened to send him back when he started flunking his classes because he spent his time writing songs instead of essays.
In 1997, Pheroze ventured to New York City and absorbed the thriving music scene that surrounded him. He fronted and managed the acclaimed hardcore metal band Scar Culture, leading them to a worldwide record deal with Century Media Records and releasing 'Inscribe'- an album which https://www.tradebit.com describes as 'a psychological roller coaster ride through the mind of a madman'. After touring extensively behind 'Inscribe' and sharing the stage with such scene contemporaries as Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall, Pheroze outgrew Scar Culture and left to pursue music that more closely resonated with him.
He found brief periods of that resonance with local New York bands Earthbound Smoke Ghost and the trio Namanista, which featured Pheroze as their dominant songwriter. Namanista was warmly embraced by Indie radio - 90.7 FM WTCC defined their EP as 'Music with a very urgent and emotional feeling to it' - and the audience at their shows likened Pheroze's vocal stylings to a 'Bollywood Chris Cornell'. Despite the accolades, Pheroze felt the need to turn his attention to nourishing his solo material and left Namanista in 2006. "It was time for me to really focus in purely on the unadulterated music that I create on my own and not get limited by the trappings of a band situation".
In his tenth year as a professional musician and songwriter, Pheroze has taken the production helm on his first solo album, Driftwood, released on December 18, 2007. With the exception of drums being handled by session pro Dante Renzi (Fight of Your Life, Reach, Armed Force, Damn Cheetah, Ouiji Pig), Pheroze played all instruments on the record, which includes exploring his Indian roots with the esraj, gopichand, and a cornucopia of percussion instruments. Mixing was done under the masterful ear of Nick Cohen (Redman, Ill Nino, Brian McKnight, 40 Below Summer).
One listen to the impassioned and fiery sounds that emanate from his core and you'll realize that there really are no trappings with Pheroze's music. His songwriting and voice echo in the spirit of Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell, Freddie Mercury and Dax Riggs but are pulled together with a seamless vision that is an ethereal journey unto itself. "I write for illumination - mine and others. If people's humanity and spirit are moved by the music I create, then risking my appendage to buy a guitar all those years ago was worth it."
