Corporal Mortification was co-founded by Drew Kanenwisher and Chris Johansson first under the moniker of Jesus Wept shortly after they had left the heavy metal band Carnage. Chris and Drew both were fast becoming fascinated with both death metal (Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation) and new black metal (Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir) however; they did not want to lose sight of what persuaded them to pursue a new musical direction. They both had come to enjoy what would later be considered "The New Wave of American Metal" with groups such as Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and God Forbid. They knew that they wanted and needed to create a band with the best of all the genres they listened to. They first set out to find the members of what would later be known as Corporal Mortification. They first scoured through their High School, picking up John Madding for Vocals, Mike Powell for Bass, and Gavin Hobbs for Drums. After a few short practices they knew Mike Powell would not be able to commit full time so they found his replacement Mike Larson. Things were running smooth until Gavin had graduated and he moved to Arizona for school. They then found classmate Francisco Gamboa to fill his position. Shorty after Gavin had left, Jesus Wept had to be tossed as another band had gotten signed with the name. In need of a name Mike presented the idea of Corporal Mortification and after some talk it was officially taken as the band''s name. The band then set out to record their self-titled demo. It ended up being six tracks and released before all the members had graduated High School. Issues would later arise with John Madding having to move and not being able to commit and he was soon replaced by Ian Salish. Fast-forward the history lesson and today Corporal Mortification have a full-length album under their belts. The album "With Black Wings They Rise" was self recorded and produced by Corporal Mortification and released October 10th 2007. Whether its the music or the live shows they are becoming a common name on people''s lips. Corporal Mortification seeks to create the music that will satisfy any metal head infusing the haunting melodies of Black Metal with the brutality of Death Metal topped off with the catchiness of New American Metal. Corporal Mortification want to spread their music all around the globe and they realize that every step forward is a step closer to that goal and that above all the fans are what create and sustain you and they need to be held in the utmost regard.
