Death Before Disco is a band. Actually itâs several bands. It was a techno band in the early 90âs in Europe that made one or two techno songs and then dropped off the face of the earth like most techno bands of that time. Itâs also a band from Belgium who seem like pretty nice people. Itâs also quite a few punk and rock bands. Whatever the case, they're the American one. We've recorded literally hundreds of songs since 1992, most of which arenât covers. Oh yeah, we also recorded eight or nine albums, played a bunch of live shows, nearly broke up three times, became the biggest band in upstate Vermont for about a week, played live with an Elvis impersonator who hit donut holes into the audience with a golf club, and convinced the nearby town of New Jerusalem that Bill Gow was indeed the mayor of Fleetwood, PA.
The band was formed in 1992 by Bill Gow and Anthony Volpe. Bill was Anthonyâs boss at a supermarket. Go figure. The day Bill was transferred to Anthonyâs store in the beginning of 1991, he taught him Barre chords and agreed to lend the poor bastard his 4-track cassette deck. A few months later he returned with it, having created a thoroughly dreadful rap album called Eat This. For some sick reason, Bill not only continued to talk to Anthony, but agreed to make music with him.
Now, in 2007, Death Before Disco has returned to active duty and recruited a third member, Mare Clark. The three just recorded their tenth album, And Then There Were Three, which they believe is their best album yet.
Originally titled The Revenge of Billy Flash, the band's 10th album And Then There Were Three marks the second appearance of Mare Clark, and what an appearance. This is the first time she appeared doing her original work, splitting her songwriting duties three way equally with Anthony and Bill.
Due to the backlog of material Bill Gow, Mare Clark and Anthony Volpe accumulated over the years, the band was originally unsure as to how to work out the track listing for this album and was considering splitting the album's 30 tracks into two albums. Instead, they whittled the track listing down to 18 songs and saved the others for later.
Mare's songs ended up being the standouts of this album, with the monolithic "Dear Sky," the Melissa Etheridge-styled "And She Cries," and the unplugged "Inside His Eyes" garnering huge praise. Bill's long awaited "Bored Shitless" finally found its home on this album. Anthony also managed to rip off Badfinger and Big Star for "Meet Me Tonight" and Keane for "Nothing's Ever Good Enough for You."
