The two caprices op. 144 paraphrase the popular Hebrides Ouverture by Mendelssohn, offering a glimpse of the high art of extemporization. Free improvisation on a given theme was a special gift of Hellers, and he was able to thrill audiences with this ability even as a child prodigy traveling all across Europe.
