Stephen Heller wrote this piano-piece in 1879 using the concept of a group of ancient tales as inspiration for the form of the work. The piece describes an imaginative journey - one we might take, scrolling through pages of a storybook. Evoking through the music, a seamless fantasy world populated by figures such as princesses, hero knights and dragons. It is a virtuous and virtuosic tale we find in these pages. Heroic and dramatic, just like the fabliaux of old.
