With his three part composition Biblical images Op. 96 Loewe created a work of surprising narrative intensity, as may be expected from a master of the German ballad. Like no other, he knew how to put the deeper meaning of the words about those three events in the New Testament to music, which references the presence of the divine in its partly simple, partly abundant expressivity. As a valuable missing link between the treasure-trove that is represented by Loewes ballads and his eminent oratories these programmatic works for piano solo are bound to enrich any romantic repertoire with their strong imagery.
