So what''s the secret to Matisse''s soul success?
At Shuffle, a monthly Toronto party held at College St. nightclub, Revival, Matisse unveiled his first live EP entitled Matisse & The Playground, with Matisse backed up with a full instrumental band and seasoned Montreal-based deejays, Team Canada.
Matisse hooked music lovers by covering a cosmopolitan mix of genres like Prince, The White Stripes, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson. His performances saw popular city venues crammed past capacity. His love-ballads and R&B two-step tracks seemed to hit all the right notes with music-savvy audiences.
“I try to put in a bit of everyone''s life into my music,” says Matisse, who struck a chord with R&B and jazz urbanites from all walks of life, with his buttery vocals and original production. Matisse is a classically trained musician and stands out from many R&B crooners, writing and executively producing much of his work.
Did we mention he also plays a mean 70’s keytar? Well, he does.
“Music has been my passion since as long as I can remember and I''m always searching for new ideas and new ways to express old feelings.”
It was in his native London, Ontario, that David Maurice Francois was dubbed Matisse at his art-focused high school, they got the name from famed Renaissance painter. Not surprisingly, the young musician flourished in art-focused high school Sir Wilfred Laurier and while his classmates where he spent countless hours composing music.
Matisse entered countless local talent shows to show off his talent and also started his own boy-band, singing R&B covers from 112, Blackstreet and Boyz II Men. Sometimes he’d even hop on display pianos in department stores and malls, serenading passers-by.
“I always loved to perform, it was always something that felt natural to me. I feel very comfortable on stage.”
When his older brother was gifted a keyboard on Christmas and Matisse got the chance to play it, he kicked his passion into high gear.
In 2006, his rousing vocals wafted over the ears of an event coordinator for the Toronto Raptors basketball team, who immediately felt Matisse would be a great fit for the team''s season games. Matisse became one of several performing acts for the 2006/2007 season and playoff games.
It’s safe to say that music has always been his passion. And it seems that passion has gone along way.
Matisse is now developing a new EP album packed with the same eclectic sound.
And what Matisse wants to give is music his listeners can identify with – a personal soundtrack of sorts.
“My music speaks to people who have gone through what I have . . . we''ve all been through relationships, through love and loss," he says.
"We''re all looking for that special person that we can connect to. It''s that''s constant tension between being on your own and having the courage to trust someone to take care of your heart.”
