During his life, Howard P. Lovecraft never made a living from writing. At
various times; he depended on a stipend from his wife, slowly frittered away
an inheritance, and at one juncture, pretty much starved (having lost 40
pounds) during lean times.
One report states that there were periods when he had to choose between
eating or buying postage in order to mail out his manuscripts. Stamps were
invariably selected over food.
He was able only to place his works in cheap pulp magazines and was often
paid little or nothing for his efforts.
Farnsworth Wright, the editor of Weird Tales, rejected much of what
Lovecraft offered for publication, though he ran most of it after the authors
death.
When presented in 1931, with At the Mountains of Madness, Wright
declined to publish it, claiming that, at 40,000 words, it was too long for his
pulp.
Five years later, in 1936, Lovecraft was able to shop it to Astounding Stories
magazine which serialized it over three editions. Though not instantly
popular, it has gone on to cult status; spawning radio and TV shows as well
as films and scores of similar stories.
Stephen King, himself, has cited Lovecraft as one of his primary influences.

The tale is set in Anarctica and relates the account of an unfortunate
expedition that discovers the remains of more than a dozen alien life forms.
