A Construction engineer Bartley Alexander, and world-renowned builder of bridges is a troubled man. He is undergoing a mid-life crisis. As a middle-aged man, he is torn between his cold American wife and an alluring mistress, an actress, in London who has helped him recapture his youth and sense of freedom. The affair gnaws at Bartleys sense of propriety and honour and eventually proves disastrous. He is with Hilda when a messenger, unable to find him, fails to warn him that a bridge he is constructing is about to collapse.
