Pneumonia, gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease), typhoid fever (a serious infection that is common in developing countries), infectious diarrhea (infections that cause severe diarrhea), and infections of the skin, bone, joint, abdomen (stomach area), and prostate are all treated or prevented with ciprofloxacin (male reproductive gland), Ciprofloxacin is also used to treat and prevent plague (a deadly infection that might be intentionally disseminated as part of a bioterror assault) and anthrax inhalation (a serious infection that may be spread by anthrax germs in the air on purpose as part of a bioterror attack). Ciprofloxacin can also be used to treat bronchitis, sinus infections, and urinary tract infections. However, if better treatments are available, it should not be used for bronchitis, sinus infections, or certain forms of urinary tract infections. Ciprofloxacin extended-release (long-acting) tablets are used to treat kidney and urinary tract infections; however, ciprofloxacin extended-release pills should only be used if no other treatment choices are available. Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone antibiotic class. It works by eradicating infection-causing germs.
