Fluconazole is used to treat fungal infections of the vaginal region, mouth, throat, esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach), abdomen (the area between the chest and waist), lungs, blood, and other organs. Fluconazole is also used to treat fungus-caused meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spine). Fluconazole is also used to prevent yeast infections in individuals who are at risk of infection as a result of chemotherapy or radiation therapy prior to a bone marrow transplant (replacement of unhealthy spongy tissue inside the bones with healthy tissue). Fluconazole belongs to the triazole class of antifungals. It acts by inhibiting the development of infection-causing fungus.
