Val-Val, is a name that I remember being called so many times as a child by one of my favorite cousins: Man-Man. I called my adult cousin this because I could not pronounce his name (smile). I hope that you will receive my music in ministry that the Lord has given me to share with you. Now let me take you over the history about how I learned to appreciate music. My ma, loved to sing from as early as my grandma could remember,my dad did also. She sung in the church up until her home going, also, in the high school choir and drama guild. My dad was also in the Jewish Synagogue he could even tap dance and performed in the St. Louis Muny Opera-dancing and singing. Ma use to sing around town as did he, but she would allow me to accompany her to her rehearsals of Jazz music with the late Chick Finney Band. I remember her singing in St. Louis'' reknown Gaslight Square neighborhood-where all the heavy weight singers would come to town to perform. God is good, all the time and all the time, God is good. I had no idea that watching her rehearse, practising on some of those same songs (in private-I was afraid to compete with the true singer (ma)) and rehearsing with her and my brother MG in her living room would help to establish the musical and societal timing, tone, and rhythm in me.
My brother has traveled all over the world just about and I have always respected his natural artistic abilities and especially the fact that he is the one who taught me how to judge whether a song was a good song or not. He stated,"listen to the lyrics-you don''t know if a song is good or not until you listen to the words". I''ve got to tell you, since the Lord has given me the space and time to say it, (smile), MG is ONE SOUND DRUMMER. He cares for his art like a parent cares for their children and he started off building his own drums from my mama''s hat boxes and by the age of 13, he was a professional musician. He played with Mel Tim and performed on the songs "Backfield IN Motion" and "Starting All Over Again", just to give you a sample. This is why I contributed a drum instrumental track to him.
Hamstring,Sr., is a branch off of the same musical tree as is his son Hamstring, Jr., whom are son and grandson to me, respectively. I love RO-Z and my family very much and I am very conscientious of how I represent them all.
ENJOY!
