Most minor burns can be treated at home. It usually heals within two weeks.

For serious burns, after proper first aid care and wound assessment, your treatment may include medications, wound dressings, therapy, and surgery. The goals of treatment are to control pain, remove dead tissue, prevent infection, reduce the risk of scarring, and restore function.

Individuals with severe burns need treatment at centers that specialize in burns. They may need skin grafts to cover large wounds. They may need emotional support and months of follow-up medical care, such as physical therapy.

Medical treatments.
After receiving appropriate first aid care and assessing the wounds, your treatment may include medications and lotions to stimulate burn healing.

Hydrotherapy. Your care team may use techniques such as ultrasonic nebulizer therapy to clean and stimulate wound tissue.
fluids to prevent dehydration. You may need to receive intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration and organ failure.
Pain and anxiety medications. Healing a burn can be very painful. You may need morphine and anti-anxiety medications - especially to change dressings.
Burn creams and ointments. If you are not taken to a burn center, your care team can choose from a variety of topical wound healing preparations such as bacitracin and silver sulfadiazine (Silvadin). These treatments help prevent infection and heal quickly.
