You will be moved when listening to Alexandra Caselli''s newest CD “Rough Edges.” This talented Los Angeles-based pianist has assembled an illustrious group of musicians to bring her original songs to life. The blending of traditional and contemporary instrumental jazz styles may bring to mind sounds off the ECM label by artists such as Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Richard Beirach.
During many years of performing concerts and festivals with KTLA reporter Jennifer York, Ms. Caselli worked with saxophonist Carol Chaikin and trumpeter/vocalist Jonathan Dane. The dynamic chemistry she has with these soloists is continued on this new release, primarily in a quartet format. Dane, who is often compared to Chet Baker, sings the lyrics of the two vocal songs on the CD. You may have heard alto flute player Jennifer Hall as part of ABC''s “Dancing with the Stars” house band, and Brad Rabuchin as guitarist with the late Ray Charles. From the Cal State Long Beach music faculty, Jennifer Leitham and Randy Drake are the bass and drum team throughout the CD. Leitham has become a jazz star in her own right after being sideman for many others including Mel Tormé and Doc Severinson.
Alexandra grew up in the Austin, Texas area and was classically trained at the piano. After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, she went on to study jazz at North Texas State University in Denton. She became a professional keyboardist in the Lake Tahoe and Reno area, and is now happily living in LA, earning a living as a musician in a variety of situations.
What critics say:
“Pianist Caselli, classically trained, who also writes some of the band’s original music, is a delight at the piano, creating moods with her mellow ballad stylings, setting the pace with bop, or for whatever is the call of the moment.”

“She’s an absolutely marvelous pianist, and if there’s any justice in this world we’ll be hearing much more from her.... I won’t even try to explain what makes Caselli so special, but I believe I know an exemplary player when I hear one, and I’ve heard one here.”
“Alexandra Caselli at the piano... comps with the best, improvises on the ballads with a depth of feeling that can be felt in the soul of those that listen. When Caselli brings on the heat and gets into the blues.... the toes start tapping and the fingers start snapping. “
-Johnny Jazz ,
“Caselli’s piano backing was exquisite... The (York) quartet plays with a lot of charisma and soul. Hearing them is truly a musical reward.

“Her tunes are some of the best written originals I’ve heard in years. Great feel, harmony that is hip and I love her time.”
saxophonist and educator
"Her touch moves from a Keith Jarrett sound to almost a Bill Evans sound (though not quite) to something entirely her own (perhaps even a bit of church music influence?)."
Add to that great name the classical heritage of Muzio Clementi, the impressionistic philosophy of Lynne Arriale (by way of Bill Evans), and a great ear for melody, and you have the total package that is Ms. Caselli.... She plays with a double-fisted abandon that imparts a real orchestral sound to her trio.
