There are many facets to Edwin McCain's career. He's a platinum-plus recording artist whose hits "I'll Be," "Solitude," and "I Could Not Ask for More" have brought him to the attention of millions, a tireless troubadour whose rapturous concerts regularly sell out, and a storyteller who keeps in audience both enthralled and in-stitches. Yet, despite the heights to which his career has taken him, McCain is most grateful for the gift he's been given to write songs that are meaningful to him, but also resonate with anyone within the sound of his voice.
"Songwriting has always been the main thing," he says. "It's funny - you can dress them up however you want to, but it always comes back to the song - to the acoustic guitar and the voice. That's how it all started for me, and that's how it is yet today."
That much is apparent from just one listen to any of his eight album releases. Starting out in his home state of South Carolina, McCain played solo acoustic shows on the resort island of Hilton Head and gradually expanded his territory from there. He formed the Edwin McCain Band and released Solitude in 1993.
A quartet of albums on Lava/Atlantic Records followed, starting with Honor Among Thieves in 1995. Two years later came the breakthrough album Misguided Roses, featuring the Top 10 smash "I'll Be." In 1999, the band released the Messenger. The Dianne Warren-penned Top 40 hit "I Could Not Ask for More," which was also featured in the film "Message in a Bottle," drove Messenger to Gold Certification. Edwinâs last recording for Lava/Atlantic, Far From Over, was released in 2001.
In 2003, McCain released The Austin Sessions, a critically acclaimed selection of new compositions, a few old favorites, and some choice covers in a stripped-down acoustic format that let the material speak for itself. On the heels of Austin Sessions, a DVD entitled Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway was released. The following year, DRT Records released both Scream and Whisper (McCainâs seventh album), a collection that balanced his acoustic and no frills, rock-and-roll sides, and Tinsel and Tap Shoes: Live From the House Of Blues, a live concert DVD. Vanguard Records and 2006 brought McCainâs most recent release, Lost In America, a collection of gritty and heartfelt tunes that captured the imagination of fans and critics alike.
As Edwin heads into the studio in early 2008 to begin work on his ninth full-length studio release, a âpassion projectâ of 1960âs southern soul cover songs, he keeps his priorities in perspective. "The highlight of what I do is playing for and connecting with the people that come out to see me live. The fans - and I hate to call them fans - the friends of music that survive the advertising campaign long enough to understand what music is truly about, and have incorporated my music into their lives to the point where it is are part of their memories and emotions - those are the ones I do it all for."
The sense of freedom and artistic choice that McCain enjoys has led him to experiment in a number of different directions. Heâs collaborated with songwriters from every genre of music. McCain's no-holds-barred attitude and his natural gift of gab have led him to other opportunities as well. He's hosted a television series (Turner Southâs Music Road), a satellite radio show (âThe Spectrumâ on Sirius Radio), and acted in a feature film (Strike The Tent). McCain's onscreen charm is also evident on his own DVD releases, Mile Marker: Stories and Songs from The Acoustic Highway, which compiles material from the span of Edwinâs career, and Tinsel and Tap Shoes: Live From the House of Blues. In addition to these opportunities and his rigorous tour schedule, he is often called upon to entertain, motivate, and connect to corporate audiences and their clients in a live setting.
With so much happening in so many directions, you'd think McCain would be harried by it all. Quite to the contrary, the music is what keeps him âin the pocketâ. And thatâs one thing that has never changed in McCainâs career, despite any ups and downs. Heâs always loved the music. And right now heâs more smitten with it and its power than ever before.
âItâs not about chart positions or record sales or anything like that, it just has to do with people coming together and sharing a moment, that's it. And thatâs all I ever wanted to do. I just love that moment in the small club and bar where every single person in there has a moment where itâs silent and they get it and itâs beautiful, that moment where the music thatâs coming off the stage is much more than the players and much more than the audience and something happens and youâre sitting there and your hair stands up. Thatâs it, man. I love it.â
