It all started when I was about twelve or thirteen and ''borrowed'' my eldest sisters guitar. I vaguely remember that it wasn''t the best of guitars. For a start, it only had three strings left on it with an action of about two inches. A bit of a banana! I used to play it, if that''s the word, flat on my lap and just barred the strings, did it for hours, up in my room until the familiar ''broomstick on the ceiling'' call came from the embattled family downstairs. Sorry family!
Never looked at a chord book, preferring to discover for myself. It wasn''t until much later, that people were pointing out to me that I was playing the guitar upside down! Oh deary me, of course, I''m a left hander! By then it was far too late to change everything around, and so, to this day, I play a right handed guitar upside down. Doh! This has it''s advantages though, as I seem to find variations of chords you ordinary right handed folks can''t do, so na, na, nana na! (It also means the same reversed, for me). So, I suppose, I''ve developed, unintentionally, a sort of unique style of my own.
I would say to any aspiring guitarist, left or right handed, throw away the chord books and theories, just explore the fret board, be prepared to make mistakes, because those mistakes, with a little tweaking, can lead to some beautiful sounds. I honestly don''t know the names of most of the chords I use. Explore, dear child, and discover.
