BLUES MATTERS MAGAZINE Paul Fenton "Live! In Toronto" (UK)

"I must confess I had never heard of Canadian guitarist Paul Fenton until this disc dropped into my lap. This live outing is Fenton''s fourth release, and as the cover depicts him in a typical guitar hero pose, this boy is gonna show ya''ll just what he''s all about.

Recorded at the legendary Blues on Bellair in Toronto where Fenton has almost residency status the ten tracks here showcase Fenton and his band to an eager and appreciative audience. Paul Fenton has set himself up as the torch bearer to the kind of slide guitar blues made popular by the likes of Elmore James, T- Bone Walker and more recently Johnny Winter and the late great Rory Gallagher. To be honest Mr. Fenton does a fine job and it''s a relief to know that this brand of slide blues is in safe hands.

To the tracks then, we have six Fenton originals (although they could have been written by any of the above mentioned artists) and four reverently played covers. You''ll find cracking versions of "Little Red Rooster" and "Shake Your Moneymaker" and an extended version of John Lee Hooker''s "I''m Goin'' Upstairs" which highlights Fenton''s digital dexterity to the max. Of the self-penned songs the driving (no pun intended) "Highway 401" and the dazzling "T-Bone Walker Blues" really stand out.

Fenton has about him a competent and able band, with a special mention for Peter Jermyn on Hammond organ whose presence lifts the tracks above the standard slide blues fare and gives them that great 60''s/70''s feel...

...Well worth a look folks." Paul Condron, Blues Matters magazine Issue 12

"Live! In Toronto" review from Poland
"This guy is a great slide player!" - that''s what Johnny Winter once said about Paul Fenton, the best slide player in Canada. "Live! In Toronto" is the title of his latest album, recorded live in a club. From the very first notes we know that the guy we are listening to is a monster: aggressive moves on the neck of the guitar, fountains of sounds. Apart from his own compositions, we''ve got here some standards played in a way that makes the listener''s hair stand on its end. Just listen to that lazy, slide introduction to "Little Red Rooster"; Paul showing off on Elmore James classics or his extraordinary, 12-minute version of Hooker''s boogie, "I''m Goin'' Upstairs" - all of them are pure orgies for slide guitar fans! Paul Fenton is a slide player who impressed me the most in recent months and I strongly recommend his new CD.

"Fourth CD of this blues guitar magician, where he performs miracles like on a great circus show. Ten exciting impressive rock blues tunes, six Paul Fenton''s own compositions and the rest Willie Dixon, Elmore James and John Lee Hooker covers. Sixty-two minutes of fast rockin'' killin'' blues performed by a brilliant guitar player who, despite the flaming music he plays, gives us a very pleasant appealing feeling too. Good taste, sensitivity, power and strength are perfectly combined to give as a result an enjoyable pleasant CD from the first tune to the last one. The CD was recorded live at Bellair blues club in Toronto, Canada. GREAT." - Vicente Zumel, La Hora del Blues Barcelona, Spain

"With ''going to Toronto on highway 401'' Paul Fenton will introduce his new CD (live). Whoever knows or hears Fenton''s sound, must be convinced that this trip will be fast and strong, just like the music of the Canadian. Fenton''s last studio CD, "Vancouver Blues" which was distributed in Europe by In-Akustik already showed a stylish, experienced singer and guitarist, who is not timid to play rock ballads. From the latter however, there is nothing like it on "Live In Toronto". Instead, Fenton dedicates himself together with other combatants, among them Peter Jermyn on the Hammond Organ, and Rick Gunn on the second lead guitar, to the hard side of Blues Rock. Both, with voice and his slide guitar, Paul Fenton goes his energy loaded and almost aggressive way. Seemingly Johnny Winter appears to have been the god father, but Canned Heat gleams through sometimes. On "Time" Fenton somewhat sounds a touch of psychedelic/Dylanesque. Moreover, Fenton succeeds in putting his own compositions in scene like the excellent "Luddite" and also with classics like "Little Red Rooster" Fenton shows that he is not simply a plagiator. Whoever loves the Blues in a strong and pumping way, will be served here first-class. editor Dietmar Hoscher, CONCERTO magazine, Vienna Austria

"Another guitar led, blues rocker from Canada (following in the footsteps of Pat Travers and say David Gogo), Paul Fenton is a fiery player who finds himself in the company of the expansive Hammond player Peter Jermyn and a tight band...Paul makes a big impression." Pete Feenstra, Soundcheck Magazine, England

BLUES NEWS GERMANY MAGAZINE
Jeder braucht Schlusselerlebnisse. In Toronto" beweist. So staunte Johnny Winter einst: "Man, this guy is a red hot slide player!" Dem is nichts hinzuzufugen. (RB)

"I managed to sneak in a reference to both Jeff Beck and Paul Fenton in the same breath...I thought you''d enjoy the company I am placing Paul in. But I believe he earns the reference." - George Seedorff, Big City Blues, Detroit

"Jaw-dropping technique, which alternates between that of a grinding chainsaw and a mellifluous violin... gruff Johnny Winter vocals (with a dash of Presley vibrato)...take a listen to his slide breaks, especially on ''Time and ''I''m Goin'' Upstairs''...what a team of players he has here!" DD Rocker, TO-NITE magazine Toronto

"This singer/guitarist, born in Ottowa (sic), Canada isn''t a beginner when it comes in playing excellent bluesrock. Paul started as a self-taught man on the slide and proved throughout the years that he can do more than just battering the guitar. He evolved from the punkrock/hardrock to finally end up at the blues, and with style! He started his slide-period with the legendary band ''The Action'' and played also with the rockband ''Number One'', the Tribute-Album (sic) of The Stones ''The Blushing Brides'' and his own band ''The Fenton Brothers Band.'' Later he also founded the successful ''The Bleedin'' Hearts'', called after a song from Elmore James. This era he left behind and went solo. Quite some songs, partially work of his own, partially covers, which are going more to the rock. Still, there are more than enough elements to please the listener of the blues. To name but a few examples: an energetic ''Highway 401'' (with a nice solo of Rick Gunn) and a great renovation of Elmore James'' ''Shake Your Money Maker.'' Years ago John Lee Hooker told him "F*** Off." The second time he met John Lee, he showed Paul how his famous song ''I''m Goin'' Upstairs'' should be played, since then an important song in Paul''s live shows. I knew Paul Fenton just by name, but also my first acquaintance with his music has succeeded. This is a splendid album. Go for it, Paul!!! https://www.tradebit.com, Belgium

"Paul Fenton is one red-hot slide guitar player", sa Johnny Winter engang om denne nå canadiske gitaristen. Slide-gitar, 60-,70-talls progressiv blues/rock i https://www.tradebit.com. Live! In Toronto er intet unntak i så måte, og la meg like godt få trekke frem ei låt som kommer til å bli en favoritt hos undertegnede i fremtida, nemlig den J.L. Hooker-skrevne, drøye 12 minutter lange, "I''m Going Up-stairs".
