BECKY ALTER- more than you ever thought you''d know about a girl from St. Petersburg , Florida.

At the age of six I had made it through the divorce of my parents, sexual abuse on many occasions, and moving to multiple places. Perhaps it makes sense that I was writing music at such a young age. I played my first chord when I was three- D Major- taught to me by my father and music mentor. I wrote my first tune when I was five, but no one believed I had written it. No one, that is, except for my mother. From the beginning “It’s” been my outlet, my way to escape, my way to express, my way to GET IT ALL OUT!

I had a garage band or 3, was a band geek in high school, and went to college for music education. I decided to change my degree because it became about mathematics and red tape, instead of feeling and moving through music. I became a philosophy major, stepped into a REAL band, and had the opportunity to be signed by a small Indie Label out of Chicago. Unfortunately, as typical young bands go, we fell apart because of artistic squabbling and emotional immaturity. Feeling dissatisfied and lost, I left the band, quit school, and moved to Colorado to escape the disappointment of it all.

It took me four years to regain faith in my direction in music and to pick up my guitar FOR REAL to start writing and playing again. During that growth period, I had been in sales in one form or another making a ton of money, fell hard for my long-time partner, and started a band called, The December Question. After another five long years of some regional success with the band (as well as the April 2006 release of my first full length CD, "Stained Glass Eyes", available at https://www.tradebit.com) and absolutely dreading going to my high paying 9-6 sales job, I realized that my soul was aching for something more. My relationship came to a devastating end, I almost became bankrupt, I sold my house, lost 2 motorcycles and a jeep, released my second full length CD, the solo, raw, acoustic album, "Exposed", in October 2006 (also available at https://www.tradebit.com) and moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in November 2006, to jump off the proverbial cliff of faith: becoming a full time musician.

Within 2 weeks of moving to Steamboat, I was incredibly fortunate to be offered a full time gig playing music for the Steamboat Ski Corporation at their multiple locations across the resort during the winter of 2007. Between regular gigs in Steamboat, I traveled frequently within the US to get as much exposure as possible. I had no idea in which direction my career was headed, but somehow I was making more money than I did even as a top level sales executive and playing my own music just felt “right”. Nearing the end of the ski season in 2007, I needed a break. I called upon some old friends that had moved to an island in the Caribbean, asking for a place to crash for a bit.

As luck would have it, my dear friends said, “Yes”! Not only did I have a place to stay, I was met with a full-on tour of Curacao and Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, thanks to my friend, who became my Caribbean Booking and PR Manager for a time, and her husband, who became my most trusted Road Manager. Based on the great press, radio play, and success of that trip, I decided to go to Europe to give it a try as well. This was far more difficult, as I had no immediate contacts. Thankfully, within a month I was playing fairly consistent gigs for the remainder of the 2 ½ months to follow.

Slightly over ten years after starting my first real band, I have traveled tens of thousands of miles, performing in 4 countries, playing at slummy dive bars to some of the most beautiful venues in the world, all without the help of a professional manager or booking agent. I am now back in Colorado, playing a second season for the Steamboat Ski Corporation, and giving everything I have in my soul to MAKE IT in this industry. I’ve realized over the course of my life that these three things matter most to me: Love, Art, and being true to the higher being within me. I’ve given my life over to God and the Universe, my Buddhist practices, painting, writing poetry, and the simplicity of strumming my guitar. I am nearing the completion of my third full length CD, “Summersaults”, which I believe is my best to date. My songs are simultaneously complex and simple, much like their mother. A blend of Blues Rock, Pop, and moody Alternative Folk, this CD is an Anouk, Sarah Bettens, and Joni Mitchell cocktail, with a twist of Kate Bush.

I believe in the good in people, and that ART is at the center of each of us. It is what brings peace and connection between ALL walks of life. My dream is to become a Rockstar: not merely for money or glory, but to create something powerful enough to enrich that connection between us all. I’m grateful for the opportunity that I have to share my vision and music with the world, and that you’ve taken the time to listen.
