Lost on Purpose is a one-man indie band that sounds a bit like Elliott Smith if he had joined The Arcade Fire, fired half their lineup and replaced them with members of The Shins, then booked a spiritual journey to Iceland via Austin to receive guidance from Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, then let the guy from Death Cab for Cutie revise some lyrics and finally recorded songs produced Built to Spill and Modest Mouse and engineered by Doves while the guys from Trail of Dead shouted encouragement and drunken insults from the control room couch. You get the idea.
Will Holland is yet another white guy chasing the dream of making music so as to avoid growing up and getting a ‘real’ job. In that specific endeavor he has already failed, but he’s working hard at this music thing so he can quit working someday and just screw around on a guitar for the rest of his life. By the way, he’s pretty good.
Will grew up in a Cleveland, OH suburb and moved to Los Angeles in 2002. He started Lost on Purpose a year later with the release of 1st, a collection of demos that managed to garner solid reviews and one song (Friends) was featured on Deep Elm Records’ Emo Diaries compilation (Vol. 10). This was followed in late 2003 by Rising Wildfires, a full-length DIY masterpiece (so say I). Will then toyed with the idea of becoming a hermit before releasing the much-heralded The Ultraviolet Effect in 2004. Just over a year later Will''s most polished effort to date, Anniversary, was released to wide acclaim. Will then rediscovered his love of soccer and added an extra ''L'' to his name (formerly ''Wil'') and now, in 2007, he (ok, I) has just released a new full-length album of 16 stunning songs called not if but when.
Hope you enjoy the music.
