ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: Acoustic
A lot can be said about Mike Garrigan.
Mike is most widely known as guitarist and support singer for the North Carolina based rock quartet Athenaeum. He joined the band in 2001 after a successful run with his own band, Collapsis. Athenaeum is best known for its 1998 hit "What I Didn't Know." Collapsis also had a hit in 2000 with "Automatic," which went to #28 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. Combined, Athenaeum and Collapsis have sold over 300,000 records worldwide.
Mike Garrigan is also a solo artist. In 1995, he began work on an acoustic album called The Lessons of Autumn. The sessions for Lessons spawned "October," perhaps his most beloved song. The Lessons of Autumn also inspired his life's work. He wanted to write and record three more solo records, each corresponding in form and sound to the remaining three seasons: summer, spring, and winter.
In 2002, Mike recorded The Promise of Summer, the second album in the seasonal cycle. Naturally, these recording sessions featured everyone in Athenaeum. Mark Kano played lots of guitar and sang a little, Alex McKinney filled in the bass, and both Nic Brown and Jeremy Vogt played drums. When the album was released in October of 2002, Mike formed the mg5 (The Mike Garrigan 5) to tour in support of it. Mark and Remy came on board, as well as Sam Clowney and Rob Clay from the Raleigh, NC super group Park Life. Athenaeum is still Mike's main gig, but every now and then an mg5 show comes to town.
When not on tour with Athenaeum, Mike Garrigan and Mark Kano often play acoustic duo shows, known affectionately by fans as the Mark and Mike show. Mike is also known to have long, drawn out conversations with his artist's mannequin, Murray. Transcripts of these episodes are found on https://www.tradebit.com. Mike also enjoys writing about his travels with Athenaeum as well as penning essays regarding random topics that interest him. These are also published for the world to see at https://www.tradebit.com
