Details:
Originally released in the spring of 1997, Shooting for Fall is the first full-length release by Pittsburgh area band Left on Dorris. Shortly after the completion of the band’s 1995 debut EP The Weight of the World, lineup changes occurred that would prove to solidify the band. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Martin McKay and drummer Dan Boyd were joined by bassist Sean Weida, guitarist Bob Boyd, and backing vocalist Virginia Weida to form the lineup that would write and record Shooting for Fall. The album was the result of a year and a half of relentless songwriting, live shows, and recording from a still new band trying to make their way in the vibrant Pittsburgh music scene of the 1990’s.
Fusing folky pop-rock influences from the likes of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Barenaked Ladies, and Blues Traveler, with more aggressive alternative influences such as Live and Pearl Jam, Shooting for Fall became an eclectic songwriting experiment from the young band. Largely a “do-it-yourself” project, the 14-song collection features long-time fan favorites “Zelda’s Wine” and “Common Ground”, and well as perennial live tracks such as “When” and “Time to Lose”.
“At the time that these songs were written, we were really just starting to get to know each other as musicians and people” says Sean Weida. “The variety of songs on the record represents our willingness to try different things, and our efforts to find our own musical niche. In retrospect, it’s amazing how much we accomplished in such a short period of time. Life was moving at light-speed back in those days.”
After being out-of-print for many years, Shooting for Fall is now rereleased as a download-only album. “We’re happy to be able to get this recording back into the ears of the people” says Martin McKay. “While we feel that our sound has progressed and matured significantly over the years, this record truly represents an early milestone in our evolution.”
“If you’re a longtime fan who’s lost your beloved copy of Shooting… here you go” says Bob Boyd. “If you’re a newer fan, check this out to hear how it all started.”
