Gilding the Lily is;
Jason Broome (Guitar, Vocals)
Robert Zimmerman (Bass, Vocals)
Ryan Coleman (Drums)
Gilding the Lily formed the month George W. Bush was inaugurated. Since then they have been performing on street corners during war protests, political rallies and benefit concerts to fund organizations such as the Middle Eastern Children's Alliance, https://www.tradebit.com, San Francisco Liberation Radio and groups that support drug treatment on demand. Ryan Coleman (Drums) and Robert Zimmerman (Bass, Vocals) also volunteer helping addicts get clean.
"It is impossible for us as creative individuals to live in this time and not be political, and actively so," says Jason Broome, who plays guitar and sings in the band. "This band was born in the greed and madness of the dot com boom in San Francisco. Within months we were kicked out of a rehearsal space, along with hundreds of other bands, we were living in closets and residential hotels with incredibly high rents, working full time, living pay check to pay check, and we were the lucky ones! By the time Bush got his war agenda going, it was inevitable that the cumulative effects of all this would involve our music."
Gilding the Lily calls their new record protest music for the new generation. "Where is it written that protest music has to be a person with an acoustic guitar whining about change," says the band. "We are all influenced by the politically charged ideals and music of the 60's and 70's, but you are going to find the anger and rebellion of early punk and metal too." Thankfully, Bay Area radio stations, KALX, KUSF, KZSU, KPFA, as well as various pirate radio stations have been very generous in supporting Gilding the Lily's approach to music and protest.
It is this diversity and head on approach to music that makes Fruits of Apathy an amazingly complex yet intuitive feat of avant rock. Meshed with social dialogue, political criticism and the heart string yank, it is an epic record that caters to the breed of music connoisseur with a smart mind and a strong stomach.
Track 1(Calibrate) hints at someone lost in addiction, helpless to change the complex insanity of religious and political fundamentalisms at work in the world. Track 2 (Bayonet Club) slams todays war pigs while mocking the naivete of those who choose to remain uninformed. Track 3 (Clutchfoot) describes the haunt of those lost in motion on Capp St., San Francisco, searching for sex, questioning both sides of the window. Track 4(Carrot Chase) describes the slippery and unfulfilling treadmill of keeping up with the Jones'. Track 6(Bullet) is an anti-war song with a twist. It juxtaposes the incessant bickering of activists with the good soldier, blindly following orders and killing and repressing others in the name of freedom. Meanwhile the background chatter of exerpts from the Project for the New American Century mocks the Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz manifesto, all the while the wail of trumpet points to the gravity it these visions deserve. Track 8(Featherweight) is a dirgy description of someone completely fed up with living day to day in the new gold rush.
Fruits of Apathy could not have come at a better time. It is Gilding the Lily's tribute to the day. They hope that their songs might at least get some younger people to think about the world around them in a new light. Most people now have can choose where to get their news and hopefully some music fans will become more aware of the damage the Bush administration has caused. Gilding the Lily's record label, Diablo Dulce, has a page of links devoted to such organizations as well as the requisite free music downloads and pics.
