ROCK: Progressive Rock, ROCK: Modern Rock
Red Star Revolt is a progressive rock power trio based in Denver, CO. Formed in 2007 from the embers of another musical project, singer/bassist Aaron Nava and guitarist Clutch began sonic experiments to stretch their music in a more experimental direction. They quickly amassed a large array of material, which was gradually filtered into a collection of 13 songs. In the meantime they searched for a suitable drummer – someone with an elusive combination of musical sensitivity and unbridled firepower. After several months of auditions they found the answer in Dino Cuneo, a kindred spirit with a recording studio tucked away in the mountains west of Denver.
Released in May 2008, Red Star Revolt’s eponymous debut conjures cinematic soundscapes that blend Modern and Vintage, Alternative and Progressive, Ethereal and Primal. Catchy melodies and punishing riffs are interspersed with passages of instrumental jams and space rock psychedelics. The diverse material reflects the intense highs and lows experienced by the band members in their personal lives throughout the writing and recording process.
Singer/Bassist Aaron Nava delivers a strong melodic sensibility that drives to the emotional core, whilst weaving an undercurrent of inventive bass lines that can best be described as Geddy Lee meets Paul McCartney. His lyrics convey a surreal reality – sometimes dark and brooding, other times hopeful, but always thought provoking.
Guitarist Clutch paints a delicate collage of atmospherics and chord fragments, contrasted with hard-driving riffs and soaring solos.
Drummer Dino Cuneo powers the RSR juggernaut, alternating between power grooves and flashes of ambidextrous virtuosity. With an extensive background in both rock and jazz drumming, his intricate patterns propel the music through a landscape of varying time signatures.
RSR’s influences include The Mars Volta, Incubus, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rush, Porcupine Tree, APC, Opeth, Voivod, the Foo Fighters, Yes and many others.
