Details:
Raw passion, dedication, hopes, dreams. This is what fuels the musical creation of five energetic guys. Resistant to the black vortex that creates misery and dampens dreams, Versus The Nothing is a band whose imagination and musical talent has rocketed them into the recording of their second album, âLet it all Come Downâ.
Humble beginnings and experimenting in basement of a house has transformed into musical passion and commitment. Jason and Ross, two of the original members harnessed the energy from there teenage years and blended their abilities with the talents of three others: Chris Shaw, Derek Merrell and Jake Wyman.
Locals gigs under the band name Elixir at Stardust Roller Rinkâs Battle of the Bands and The Endoplasmic got their name out there. It gave them a taste of what it was like to perform for a live crowd. In 2005 they played the Supernova Battle of the Bands at the Croatian Cultural Centre and snagged the attention of Chris Shaw and Derek Merrell, who quickly became an integral part of the band. Late 2005 saw the recording of Elixirâs first album, So This Is Life, and the introduction of Jake Wyman as drummer in early 2006.
With a fused membership and a shared vision, the band headed upwards, landing in the top 10 finalists of 99.3 Fox Seeds (https://www.tradebit.com) contest in 2005 and in the top 20 of over a thousand entries in 2006. In the Spring of 2007 they were repeatedly invited and enthusiastically received at The Roxy, Richards on Richards, and the Plaza Club.
August 2007 saw the bandâs first Western Canadian tour, as they pumped energy and rock into the hearts of close to 500 people at venues in Vancouver, Kamloops, Calgary, Red Deer and finally Edmonton, where they had been selected from over 1,200 bands to co-headline with three other bands at the North American Diesel Performance Drag Races.
The end of 2007 saw a need to change their name from Elixir to Versus The Nothing, as they sat down to collaborate and passionately record their second album. The soulful, melodic sounds of Rossâ voice, combined with the emphatic balance of bass, guitar and drums appeal to a diverse audience, although at heart the boys love to fill a room with pulsating hard rock.
They pool their inspirations and challenge each otherâs creativity.

Members:
Ross Archibald â Vocals
One of the two who started it all, Ross has been singing from the time he could talk. From walking to school or showering, Rossâ melodious voice has been out for the public to hear. He has been an invaluable member of various choirs throughout school, and was a BC Honor Choir Student in both 2000 and 2001. Some of his musical influences are Brandon Boyd (Incubus), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Maynard James Keenan (Tool), Mel Torme, Zack DeLa Rocha (Rage Against The Machine) and Scott Anderson (Finger Eleven).

Jason Scannell â Bass

The one who braved the wrath of his father for using his instruments and practicing in his basement, Jason has been dedicated from the beginning. Concert band and jazz band classes in high school, combined with private lessons and support from his dad Muttley gave Jason his ability to rock it hard on the bass. His musical influences have been Justin Chanceler (Tool), Les Claypool (Primus), Sam Rivers (Limp Bizkit) and Tim Commerford (Rage Against The Machine).

Chris Shaw â Guitar
Chris first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, and has been attached to one ever since, teaching himself how to play, and discovering new riffs. He has taken several courses in Music Composition, and draws inspiration from a variety of musical influences, from blues to metal to classic rock. Chris joined Versus The Nothing in February 2005. He values the musical talents of Soundgarden, Kim Thayil, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, White Zombie, Pantera, Slayer, ACDC, and the legendary Jimi Hendrix.

Derek Merrell â Guitar/Vocals

Derek began playing the guitar at the age of 14 and was quickly recognized as having talent. He was part of the Terry Fox Music Program in high school and graduated with Honors of Distinction. Derek has performed many times in front of live audiences, including a Battle of The Bands at General Motors Place, where he played with both the first place and second place bands. He has also recorded at Mushroom Studios with John Wazniak of Marcy Playground. His musical influences have been Santana, Papa Roach, Incubus, Joe Satriani and Breaking Benjamin.

Jake Wyman â Drums
Jake started playing percussion in high school at the age of 13. Originally schooled in concert and jazz band, he developed a love for all the different genres and sub-genres the rock scene had to offer in the late 80s and early 90s. Ten years later, the old school funk sounds of the 60s and 70s were responsible for Jakeâs evolving his style of play to what it is today, applying funky rhythms with hard hitting sound. His influences have been Nirvana, Guns Nâ Roses, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica. In 2006 he toured Indonesia as the fill-in drummer for The Flairs, performing to a daily crowd of 20,000 â 100,000.

Vancouver â Party crashing Elixir (Now known as Versus the Nothing) at Kwantlen College
Steven Abbot â Project Opus â Thu, 2007-02-22

When the prospect of a lunch hour show cam my way, I jumped. Only a few minutes frommy home office there was almost no effort involved to go see a FREE (!) show. I couldnât go wrong. I would have excused them if it was lame, but what a surprise. Elixir Rocks!

I did, though, crash a party. I quickly discovered that this wasnât really an open performance. It was an effort by the Student Council at Kwantlen University College in Langley to do something fun for the students: an outdoor show by a cool band, with free pizza and pop â itâs not something a student could pass up. Many did though.

I arrived about halfway through the set. It was cold, and there were only a handful of people huddled around the soundboard keeping warm, but they were sure digging the music. We were outdoors near the end of a long, outdoor courtyard. Surrounded by brick and metal building, the sound was some of the best I had heard, even from the clubs. Crystal clear vocals and you could hear all of the instruments instead of just a thunderous drone.

I hadnât heard much from these guys before, so every song was something new for me. They delivered powerful and solid tunes with a lot of passion. Even though there was almost no one in attendance, the band brought the attitude and the energy that makes it work. If I get the chance to see them in a club (or anywhere with a bigger audience) I will be there. As I said before â they rock!

SPM Music Show Review for August 3rdâ¦

âElixir also played an out of control set as well! I think the stage was too small for these guys cause they were freaking everywhere, with a sound reminiscent of ALEXISONFIRE. They also have a new CD out too as well, called âSo this is lifeâ¦â (you can get it through them).â
