ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Today's Top 40
This 21 year-old, New York City based songwriter/arranger/musician has been born and bred in the rock and roll mold. Greg's mastery of every major rock instrument is dumbfounding. He plays guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, drums, as well as trombone. Greg learned all of these instruments in the Purchase, New York basement studio built by his rockstar father, Bob Mayo. In this subterranean enclave, Greg watched, listened, and learned as his father practiced in between tours with Peter Frampton, Hall and Oates, Robert Plant, Aerosmith, Joe Walsh, and Foreigner, to name a few bands he played with. During his father's absences on the road, Greg took his place under the platinum records mounted on the wall and grew into his rock virtuosity, grew into his personal musical sound, and grew closer to his distant father.
Greg's music is based in pop/rock with jazz and soul infusions. The music has been described as Stevie Wonder meets Stevie Ray Vaughan. His style's appeal transcends all age groups and musical tastes. Mayo's songs are filled with catchy choruses and groove based rhythms that have captivated a variety of different audiences all over the Northeastern United States. The bluesy guitar licks combined with the funky horn lines create an interesting combination for anyone who listens. Improvisation sections, that are a feature of Greg's live performances, bring momentum to Greg's music and weave the audience into a unique show experience that is both memorable and exciting and shows all of the jazz, soul, funk, and rock artists that have influenced this young prodigy.
In September of 2003, Greg put a backing band together, Greg Mayo and The Groove. After a few performances in the New York, Greg and The Groove have opened for Mos Def, Amos Lee, Midtown, and Busta Rhymes. Greg and The Groove have held down multiple residencies in Manhattan, including the World Famous Bitter End. The stage at the Bitter End has been graced with the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, among countless others. They have played shows at many colleges including; Fordham, Trinity, Loyola - Baltimore, Dartmouth, Union, Gettysburg, Washington & Lee, Purchase, Lehigh, Hartford, among many others. Greg Mayo and the Groove have performed at a whole slew of charity events including concerts for such charities as The American Red Cross September 11th Memorial Retreat for the families of victims, "Rock 2 Rebuild" Tsunami Relief Benefit for Americares, the N.Y.U. "Relay For Life" for cancer research, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Amnesty International, https://www.tradebit.com, and OxFam. They also enjoy radio play on certain radio stations in the New York Metropolitan area.
