"Tender and well delivered, with subtle and unexpected rhythmic responses. [Ancestral Tongues] has much to offer those who yearn for ballads, nicely crafted tunes, and compelling solo work from all."
- Andy Bartlett, Cadence Magazine

An alumni of the Berklee School of Music, Brian Groder has worked with guitar great Dennis Sandole (who is probably best known as teacher to a who's who list of jazz luminaries including John Coltrane) and continues to work and write with the legendary Joanne Brackeen, who has praised the originality of his voice. He first met Brackeen while attending her Master Artist's residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida. Two years later, Groder returned to the Atlantic Center to study and perform with the master of avant-garde jazz, Cecil Taylor.

Brian Groder likes to play with time signatures and tonal patterns without alienating those looking for a well-written song. He explains his compositional voice as "a balance between melody and syncopation with multiple tonalities and irregular rhythms," and he's not afraid to explore sounds that might be influenced by Japanese scales, for example, without falling into the "world music" category. His music is, above all, jazz, and Groder has the jazz musician's ear for new things, even in unusual places -- and while doing unmusical things.

"One tune," he says, "is set in a Greek time signature, which I heard while I was bartending at a Greek wedding. It amazes me that I thought of it, but it's interesting and it works."

Andy Bartlett, writing for Cadence Magazine, called Groder's music "tender and well delivered, with subtle and unexpected rhythmic responses." Bartlett said of Groder's first CD, Ancestral Tongues (Latham, 1995): "It has much to offer those who yearn for ballads, nicely crafted tunes, and compelling solo work from all."

A New York native, Groder comes by his musical abilities honestly. Both his parents were working musicians during the Swing Era (one of the original Swing Eras, not the one just passed), and Brian started his own career playing piano at the age of five.

His journey away from New York began in the early 80's, contributing his trumpet and ensemble skills to the heyday of Atlantic City, where he played for the house bands of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., and then on the road with Joe Cocker. From there he hopped to Philadelphia, and for ten years ran a progressive and acclaimed Instrumental Music curriculum for an entire school district. While there he recorded two albums with the Abstract Truth ensemble, and Ancestral Voices, his first CD heading his own group. The eight original songs were a showcase of Groder's craftsmanship and style on trumpet and flugelhorn. The record garnered public acclaim as far afield as Japan, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, where it became a staple on the "National Radio" jazz show.

In 1997 he "returned to the Land of Jazz" and moved back to his beloved New York City. He has since recorded "Perihelion", "Incantations" (tracks from both available on and a fourth album recorded with the legendary Sam Rivers Trio which will be released in the fall of 2005. His work includes original film soundtracks and multi-media presentations, as well as the theater score of the Orlando International Fringe Festival production of "Solos" (
