Hellbitch Diddley is a mythic Canadian songwriter whose backup band, The Toledo Torpedoes, may not actually exist. Some speculators think Hellbitch Diddley plays all of the instruments himself. Apart from his sardonic and wickedly witty songs, little is known about the man. He is reclusive and ferociously independent, especially when it comes to his music. No one is quite sure where he lives, when he was born, or what his real name might be. No journalist has ever interviewed him, though many have tried. Rumors abound that he is a mental patient who fluctuates unpredictably between lunacy and lucidity. But what a songwriter: his lyrics teem with ingenious wordplay and jaded observations, and his voice evokes the facetiousness of Frank Zappa or Lyle Lovett.
