What kind of music does Guy-Michael Grande make?
Passionate power-pop for roller-coaster romantics.
So Much Of What I Wanted is a sonically satisfying blend of Beatles pop sensibility, James Taylor sensitivity and Paul Simon lyricism. If you like their songs -- along with the music of artists like John Mayer, Elvis Costello, The Eagles & company -- you're going to love this CD.
With a voice often compared to Simon, Jackson Browne and del Amitri's Justin Currie, Grande is like them above all a wordsmith. His songcraft is everywhere present without ever becoming obvious, especially in the melodically memorable "Melinda," humorously romantic "26 Calorie Kiss" and rockingly introspective title track.
I've got no cure for curiosity, just pure instincts that I trust
The allure of sheer velocity my enduring wanderlust
I've got so much of what I wanted, yet I face this dark divide
I've got so much of what I wanted, still I'm unsatisfied
At times his wordplay sparkles with Dylanesque touches, as in the all-too-relevant rant "Telemarket This!" (recalling Currie's influence) and mythical rocker "Hurricane Jane." Around other turns, he gives us sultry slow-burners like "Bonfire Girls," a kind of David Gray-meets-Chris Isaak end of summer groove that's sure to be an instant favorite among beachgoers everywhere.
Hopeful romantics will melt over the plaintive "Whenever We're Together," which vividly captures love's constant seesaw side-effects, then get lost in addictive radio rockers "Modern Marvel" and "Before You Go." And fans of the late Dave Carter -- whose career with partner Tracy Grammer had only begun to blossom in the folk world before his sudden passing -- will appreciate Grande's inspired new version of "Merlin's Lament."
Proudly influenced by great pop songwriters, Guy-Michael Grande is earning a dedicated audience for his own warmly distinctive voice and lyrically meaningful songs. With So Much Of What I Wanted, the Northeast native is actively reaching out to listeners who love great music, performing melodically memorable songs whose stories really resonate.
