ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Beatles-pop
Hankshaw was formed in 1995. The original lineup consisted of Milton Chapman (guitars, keyboards, vocals), John Gatto (drums), Harold Hasselback (vocals), and Brian Roberts (bass). In October of 95, the band recorded a 4 song demo at Audio Lab Studios in Tampa , Florida . This quickly caught the ears of Network Sound Records, and in the summer of '96 the band recorded their first full length LP "Nothing Personal". Network Sound released "Nothing Personal" in February of '97. That summer, Hankshaw embarked on their first tour with Hot Water Music and Ann Beretta. After returning from that tour, the band started working on their next release. The 4 song EP "Every Day I Wish You Harm" was recorded in the spring of '98 and was released later that year by Doghouse Records. Shortly after releasing the Doghouse EP, the band followed up with a 2 song 7" released on Tampa based Schematics Records. In the summer of '98, Hankshaw went on tour with Elliott. The band's next release was 5 song EP released on Apt. 13 records in March of 2000.
It was at this point that Hankshaw began to re-evaluate their musical direction. They decided that it was time to focus on growing as song writers and a strong desire to push them selves in new directions began to surface. The first major step toward the band's new vision was scoring the short film "Stillness" directed by their friend Bruce Muller. Working on this project inspired Hankshaw to write from a different perspective than they had in the past, and helped form the foundation for the new sounds and textures they would later experiment with.
Shortly after recording the "Stillness" soundtrack, Hankshaw parted ways with their original bass player. The position was filled by Bryan Bates, who at the time was in both Hankshaw and The Washdown. Bryan was a member of the band during the most intense period of writing and re-writing songs for the next project. Bates's commitments with The Washdown became more demanding as the band started earning more attention on a national scale. It was in July of 2002 that Bates left to pursue The Washdown full time, and Hankshaw set out for California to begin recording "King Candy & The Time Traveling Train."
The work on "King Candy" was split between the summer of 2002 and the spring of 2003. The record was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid of The Hippos and currently Dirtly Little Secret. Chris Fudurich assisted with engineering duties. Recording took place at Standard Electrical Recording Studios, Hard Drive Studios, and Ariel's home studio, all in the greater Los Angeles area. Without a bass player for the sessions, the band was fortunate enough to gain the participation of LA studio mainstay Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who has played with Beck, Tori Amos, Air, and is currently a member of Ima Robot. Additional bass duties were rounded out by Sam Simms
What can listeners expect from "King Candy & the Time Traveling Train?" Scott Harrell of the Weekly Planet summed the experience up quite nicely: "... it's an upbeat amalgam of pop anthemics, electronic textures, Beatle-esque harmonies and warm liquid disco, a sophisticated and charmingly affected dance-rock album that splits the difference between an organic '70s vibe and a contemporary dance-punk lack of inhibition. Sometimes it's weird, and sometimes it verges on a guilty-pleasure sort of glee, but it's unquestionably the work of a band that knows what it wants to hear."
