the heroes are horses was started by mark bradley-shoup, jim tate, and kenny burnap in 1998 as an experiment in folk music, combining simple song structure, traditional instruments and effected radio static with elements of the avant-garde. early recordings were made with charles allison but were never released, only slowly built upon. after a while, kenny moved to oregon to be a chef. the band then began recording itself at corner room and was joined by buddy t., oc (of Lambchop). mark moved to chapel hill and jim worked on the recordings, bringing in additional players (bob stagner of the shaking ray levi society, gordy nichol, jim palmour, steven malone, brandon and wendy buckner of title one, and jane belz) to fill out the recorded and sometimes live sound. ryan dixon joined shortly after completion of the recordings and made us wish we could start them all over again. he likes whiskey, salmon and the occasional brisk horseback ride, especially in the fall. hah now calls itself a four-piece and have played with cat power, smog, songs: ohia, the radar brothers, mirah, tara jane o''neal, the ladybug transistor, electronic musician and composer gino robair, the shaking ray levi society, half-handed cloud, gold, the infradig ensemble, jairus, the quiet ones, and sun records'' cast king.
