ROCK: Folk Rock, FOLK: Folk Pop
The bulk of Adam's upbringing was spent in Malibu, California, where he was impressed at a young age with the presence of big personalities. He has a fond memory of his mother, waving hello to Michael Landon like she knew him..."Hey Mikey!" she would say. Two of his best friends lived next door to Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan, separately. He was friends with Flip Wilson's daughter, had a crush on Louie Loughnane's (horn player for Chicago) daughter, and the Eagles were known to play at his step-dad's restaurant, the Spaghetti Joint.
As attractive and intriguing as his Malibu days seem, they were mostly consumed with poverty and fear. Today, Adam Hirsh is not a finished person and will battle with these two themes throughout his life. On his own from a young age, he was saved by key people who were fans of his spirit beore they were fans of his music. Home, Forgiveness, Abuse and Redemption are themes that Adam explores with words only experience could yield. Songs like "Leaving California" illustrate some of that poeticism, though it is a subject he revisits from time to time.
Adam exorcises his pain through his music, as he does through his work with middle-school kids, a subject he engages in songs like "A Hard Way To Live" and "Blink Twice." And in the matters of love, Adam has felt the highs of honeymoons and the lows of tough break-ups ("Copper Moon" and "On the Road to Find Out"). His remarkable life begins in the mornings with a smile and an internal celebration that he has lived his hardest days and rebuilt his existence through love and music.
Fans gather in the hundreds to see Adam Hirsh in this celebration. He and his band (The Hirsh Project) have packed rooms around Boston, catching the attention of Music Writers, Booking contacts, Independent Labels, Local DJs, Music Management...and the numerous accidental attendees, now fans.
I try to keep a journal, and I'm always more pleased when I do, but these songs...and the others like them are my markers. They are a very powerful distinction of time and emotion for me, and I imagine all songwriters.
That's a big reason why I do what I do. And if my songs become markers for others...well that's just coal in the fire, isn't it?
Thank you and enjoy the music,
