PAUL DONAT
After university studies in 1982 which led to a Diploma in Jazz Studies on guitar, Paul traveled and performed in Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco, Mexico, Guatemala, Denmark and Brazil with Danish composer Maria Petersen. Their eight year association culminated in two and a half years in a Rio nightclub where they performed with invited Brazilian guest musicians for four nights a week. Paul was totally immersed in Brazilian music and culture. He developed a passion for Bossa Nova, Samba and Brazilian Popular Music, and dedicated himself to learning these styles on guitar and composing.

Paul returned to Canada in 1992 to fulfill a long time desire to play acoustic bass. He studied with Skip Beckwith while completing his BA Music degree. Paul and Skip formed "jazznsamba" with vocalist Claire Shaw. In jazznsamba, Paul was able to explore the Bossa Nova repertoire on guitar and the Jazz repertoire on bass while Skip played both bass and piano. The group toured Canada twice and produced two CDs. Meanwhile, a gig in 1997 with comedian Steve Allen (host of the original Tonight Show) and pianist Paul Smith (who backed Ella Fitzgerald for many years) was also a highlight.

Upon receiving a professional development grant in 1999, Paul came to Toronto to study with bassist Steve Wallace and has been actively involved in the music scene. He performs regularly in Brazilian MPB group Sambacana, Geordie Haleyâs Everytime Band, Jorge Miguel Flamenco Company and J.V. Dixon & Rhythm Changes. In his own project, Sambiosis!, Paul explores Brazilian inspired Jazz with Mike Murley, Kevin Turcotte, Gordon Sheard and Alan Hetherington. For more visit https://www.tradebit.com.

RYAN DRIVER
From Harry Partch to Tom Waits, to name but two, musicians have been fascinated by the possibilities of found objects and homemade devices. Torontoâs Ryan Driver is an especially talented exponent of this tradition. Playing rulers, balloons and cell-phone speakers, he has created rich, tuneful vocabularies from each instrument. Gigging with seven bands, Driverâs musical output ranges from psychedelic lounge to alt-alt-country, always performing with a sincerity and musicality that negates any notions that heâs just putting us on. A frequent performer in projects associated with Torontoâs Rat-Drifting label, he works with a number of fellow DIY-ists who aid and abet the homemade deconstruction of music in all its recognizable forms. Heâs won the respect of a wide cross-section of fellow musicians; one of Canadaâs foremost jazz bassists, Rob Clutton, marvels "Heâs my favourite musician on the planet! When he plays quasi-ruler bass, it's like, why do I even bother?"

CHRISTINE DUNCAN
Christine has been singing professionally since the age of 15. She began performing on stage when she was 5 years old with her family The Duncans, and toured North America extensively until the age of 19. A musical chameleon with a near five octave range, Duncan uses her voice as an instrument, exploring its full tonal, timbral and textural range. She is involved in everything from jazz, R&B, gospel, improvised music, sound poetry, to new music and musique actuelle.

She has recorded and/or collaborated with Bob Murphy, Hugh Fraser, Miles Black, Veda Hille, Paul Plimley, Danielle Palardy Roger, Jean Martin, DB Boyko, and performed with such names as Kenny Wheeler, Rufus Reid, Dave Young, P.J. She has six recordings to her credit and is featured on countless other recording projects. Christine has been a member of the VEJI (Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation) big band for 10 years. She has been a featured performer in two new music operas and has been teaching voice since 1995. For the last few years she has also been very involved recording and touring with Barnyard Drama, her group with drummer/electronic artist Jean Martin.

Geordie Haleyâs Every Time Band
The Green Suite and Other Stories
By David Dacks Exclaim Magazine

Hereâs a band that could hardly be accused of having a conventional line-up. Sure, four out of six members are normal enough: Haley plays electric guitar, Evan Shaw is on sax, Paul Donat plays bass, and the drums are handled by Jean Martin. However, the contributions of Eugene Martynec on laptops and Christine Duncanâs free vocalising mashes up everyoneâs role from rhythm to harmony and from background to lead. Even with the modulating roles of each player, the music remains quite identifiably jazzy with an art pop edge. Shifting grooves, a ridiculously varied sonic palette created by Martynec and Duncan, and the naturalistic imagery of the lyrics are the strongest aspects of this disc. Itâs a mosaic of ideas as everyone gets their glory at some point, while the leader is more of a conductor than lead soloist. Evan Shaw fares very well on his lead sax parts, particularly when his excellent melodic sense is paired with Duncanâs unfettered vocals, as on âFound Above.â The Green Suite is more successful than not and there are so many little touches that it bears much repeated listening.
