Nemisfear was formed in 2002 by producer D-Rex aka Derx, “I wanted to do something a little different from the stuff that was out there at the time but still deliver a classic sound”.
After listening to what emcees Phrase aka Kel & Xplicit aka Mele had recorded on their sample based Strange Universe project, D-Rex decided to take the group into a whole different direction by adding the experimental element of drum machines and live instrumentation to an already abstract sound.
“Collectively we deliver something powerful to the game, something that has been missing from hip-hop for quite some time”, says Phrase.
The group met by chance. Xplicit, and D-Rex attended the same high school. They met Phrase at an emcee battle in a local video store. “I used to go around looking for battles”, says Phrase. “One day I challenged Xplicit and he was like, yo I don’t wanna battle but I got some equipment”, thus Strange Universe was formed, which later took on the name of Nemisfear under the music production of D-Rex.
Nemisfear combines a multitude of influences into what one might call “ Rap for the new generation”, an incredibly refreshing sound that even those immediately repelled by the very term “Hip-hop”, can appreciate, says D-Rex.
These days the guys are less concerned with battling and more focused on the music. “Doing shows, formulating new lyrical concepts, collaborating & pretty much anything that has to do with getting our shit out there and into the public”, says Xplicit, who also provides the groups scratches.
“I promise you one hit and your hooked, like crack music, that shit that keeps you coming back for more and more man”, says Phrase, depending on what he’s smoking on.
