A WILL THAT DEFIED DEATH…TWICE A PHOENIX Rises From the Ashes LOS ANGELES, CA (July 2008) – While he doesn’t yet have all the answers, opera singer Jason Black boldly declares, “I should have died…twice, so I know there is something amazing that I am called to do!” Anyone having seen the ruins of his GEO Storm or the deep laceration from his near decapitation, in addition to hearing the hopeless prognoses from the physicians and specialists that treated him, would assuredly agree…Jason Black is a walking miracle. It was March 14, 1999, when Jason Black, 22 and fiancée Tausha Edwards, 21 were heading home from singing in an opera performance when forced to make the split second decision of smashing into a motionless, unlit car, wrecked from speeding, in the fast lane, to avoid colliding into nearby pedestrians. While, Tausha, walked away with a broken arm, concussion and cuts, rescuers were shocked to discover Jason still alive. It took the Jaws-of-Life to pry Jason out of the wreckage to be rushed to emergency. The extent of broken bones and the severity of his head trauma left ER surgeons extremely doubtful about his possibility of recovery. Institutionalized due to the behavioral disorders resulting from the brain trauma, a belligerent Jason refused to succumb to the “experts” that said his recovery, if any, would take up to two years or longer. Jason insistently defied the odds. To the amazement of physicians and family alike, within a few short weeks of being taught to speak, walk, dress, and recognize his family, friends and surroundings, Jason was recovering at miraculous rates, making it only fit to release him. After a full recovery, the lead tenor and soprano finished college, married and begansinging and performing full-time for professional opera companies both in the states and abroad. All was well and life was good for the young couple until fate would have it that they’d face the threat of death once again. While moving into their newly purchased home in 2001, Jason and two teenage neighbors were moving a heavy six foot square glass table when one of the boys dropped his end causing the table to crack upward. The large piece of glass crashed down like a guillotine into Jason’s neck. The gash was critically deep and extended from his earlobe to his chest semi-decapitating him. Jason was rushed to Ceder-Sinai Hospital where he was said to have lost more blood than he retained. While ER doctors aggressively worked to keep him alive, Jason was determined to muster up a whisper to let them know that he was an opera singer and needed them to save his voice. After saving his life doctors did what they could to honor his request; however, after looking at the damage to his voice box, both jugular veins, his nicked spine, the severed nerves, the paralyzation of his diaphragm, arm and most importantly his vocal cord, specialists said he would never speak, let alone, sing again. With Tausha by his side, Jason was left only with the ability to whistle. “Music, in Jason’s mind, is what made life worth living,” said Tausha. “He just could not settle with the thought of never singing again and then about six months later, he opened his mouth and said… ‘Hello.’ ” “We were shocked!” “To our surprise we heard his voice.” For the next two weeks Jason spent his days speaking and developing his voice and seemingly as suddenly as the operatic tenor’s voice was taken away he was miraculously singing again. Jason and Tausha unequivocally say it was faith and love that got them through and they are committed to using their story and talents to touch lives and give audiences inspiration and hope. This profound story and Jason’s continued upward trajectory to victory in voice has been covered by ABC News, the LA Times, and can be seen on the pilot of Untold Stories of the ER on TLC, the 700 club, Inside Edition and The DISCOVERY Channel. A PHOENIX Rises From the Ashes!!! Jason has been fortunate to perform in many venues and styles from Los Angeles Opera to Munich, from Pebble Beach to Princeton, from studio work to full concert performance, from voice-over work to solo oratorio & symphony work, from Jeep to Time Warner commercials, from live stage to camera work, from television to the silver screen. In the latest chapter of their success story, Jason has just released PHOENIX, a CD showing off some of his varied facets and styles of music to inspire the listeners to Hope and Abundance. He is excited to see where the next page of their lives will take them. Jason hopes you enjoy his sharing his heart with you in music.
