Details:
Janice M. Stain, formerly Janice O’Neil, the ninth of ten children, was born in Fresno, CA to John and Lee O’Neil. Her father was a Methodist Minister. Her mother was a nurse’s aid. Janice was surrounded by a family of musicians and followed suit by singing and playing piano at an early age. She also learned to play clarinet and tenor saxophone. By the age of seven, however, Janice made a declaration to her parents that she wanted to be a doctor. She followed through and attended Stanford University for her undergraduate studies and earned her degree in Human Biology while completing premed courses. During her freshman year at Stanford, Janice organized, directed, and was the pianist for the Stanford University Gospel Choir. After college, Janice worked in Fresno to earn money to apply for medical school. She entered medical school at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, earning her M.D. degree in 1990. She went on to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1994. She is a board-certified fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has practiced medicine in Fresno, California since.
Although medicine and music are a big part of Janice’s life, her greatest joy has been her twenty years of marriage to Michael D. Stain. They have two precious daughters, Kristen 16, and Andrea 12.
In 1997, Janice and her sisters (The O’Neil Sisters) wrote and recorded, “Ode to Fresno” which was selected by the Fresno City Council as the Official Song of Fresno, California.
In recent years, Janice has performed many benefit concerts for Young Life. She is also facilitator of worship. She leads worship at her church, Valley Christian Center, in Fresno, California. She and her nine-piece band have performed throughout the area in many churches and other conference and outreach venues. She has performed at Borders Bookstore to a packed and overflowing house. Her group also participated in the “Women With Grace” conference in Central California along with other nationally known artists.
Janice is a prolific songwriter and creates music from her heart through her love relationship and life experience in Christ. Her profession in medicine gives her an up-close and unique perspective on many social and family issues. Often, a new song will come to her while doing surgery, delivering a baby, or between seeing patients in her office. Her music speaks of the hope, love and joy in having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She is exuberant and enthusiastic as she shares the gospel through her life and music, which is based on the Word of God; for it is the Word of God that has the power to heal, touch and change lives. She is often called upon to speak to the challenges that women face in balancing their careers and lives as wives and mothers, while keeping God “first” in the midst of it all.
Janice Stain has two released CDs, her first recording being “Janice Stain, Live in Concert”. Her most recent CD, “Worship the Lord of All” is a collection of passionate, energetic, and worshipful music that promises to edify all who hear it. Janice is soon to release her third album of powerful and encouraging music in 2008. She will also release a music DVD from this album.
Over the past three years, Janice has been sought out to share the spoken Word of God through teaching and preaching. Her message
of God’s love permeates her music, as she lives what she sings about. She believes that she must worship God in all that she does—
practicing medicine, being a good wife and mother and neighbor.
Attending a concert of Janice Stain’s is a worship experience. Many people comment on how Janice’s music is “fresh”, “pure worship”, and how one always leaves her concerts feeling encouraged, rejuvenated and inspired!
