My name is Calabash Flash and I live in Calabash, NC. I am a singer/songwriter who is deeply involved in Carolina Beach Music and its dance, the Shag. I have had three songs from my other CD called “FLASH FLOOD” hit various Beach Music Top 40 charts over the last two years. Two songs got to number 3 and one got to number 10. Another one of my songs hit the charts by a solo artist in 2002 and by a band in 2006. The singer’s version got to number 5 and the band’s version got to number 1.
I wrote the song “WILD CROWD” and was initially going to put it out as a single. Instead, I added two other songs that I had previously done to make it a three song CD sampler. One song was released on a compilation CD, and the other was a version of a song that was never released.
I was inspired to write the song “WILD CROWD” while I was attending an outdoor concert at a ocean front club in North Myrtle Beach, SC. One of my favorite beach bands was playing, it was a hot day, and everyone was is in a great mood and feeling wild. It was one of those days when the music was terrific and the crowd was really into the band. I passed by some folks in the back and told them that I was going to write a song about them because they really represented what I would call the Wild Crowd. The song “WILD CROWD” is a party, sing along type song, intended to get the fans involved. In fact, when I sing this song live, I tell the audience that this song is not so much for me to sing as it is for them to sing. After one time through the chorus they are on their feet and singing along.
Even though it has a funky beat, “FUNKY SHAG” is very suitable for shag dancing. Shag or Beach Music normally has a steady 110 to 130 beats per minute, give or take a few beats, and it''s normally NOT funky. I thought that this would be fun to try. Why not?
“Just Like Before” would be considered, in the Beach Music vernacular, a “smoothie”. Easy, jazzy, and kinda slow, yet danceable.
Even though this CD has only three original songs, it has three different types for three different occasions. ENJOY !!!!!
