âSONGS TO SAVE THE WORLDâ
This amazing CD collection includes classical guitar, world beats, folk, indie, rock, reggae, and much more. The music on this special CD is as versatile as it is meaningful: âSongs to Save The Worldâ is raising awareness about the ongoing human rights abuses in China as all eyes are on the country during the 2008 Olympics.
In the run up to the Beijing Olympics, the CCP has blocked free media and intensified the persecution of oppressed groups and individuals, including Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, Uyghurs, Christians, and those in North Korea, Sudan, and Zimbabwe, whose dictatorial governments are supported by the CCP.
âSongs to Save the World,â like the human rights campaign that inspired it, hopes to provide an unfettered voice for those who need to be heard. The international campaign, the Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR), held events in 162 cities, on six continents and in over 40 countries, to bring awareness of Chinaâs human rights crimes before the Olympics. Some of the CDâs contributing artists performed at HRTR events and all support the HRTR mission.
Musicians like Sterling Campbell (drummer for David Bowie and the B-52s), Jeff Saphin, Scott Berendt, Courtney Dowe, Light Club, Yellow Express, and others have contributed songs, forming a unique blend of musical styles with powerful, positive messages. Veteran and newer artists alike are using the power of music to illuminate the efforts of the many Chinese who are striving for a brighter future.
We hope this CD will inspire people around the world who seek a peaceful, open China, to speak out, and work for a country free from the chains of persecution. Now that is something to sing about!
Proceeds from the CD, which sells for $10, will go to benefit key human rights groups that have participated in the HRTR events, including advocates for Tibet, Sudan, Burma and Falun Gong.

HRTR CD ARTIST BIOâS:
Light Club - Freedom First
New in 2008, Light Club formed as a group of human rights rock musiciansânow serving the cause of freedom for China.
In early Spring, Light Club found themselves performing at Human Rights Torch events, and the band has drawn a strong response and a warm reception from those whom it reaches. As composers, performers, and professionals, members of Light Club know that they can succeed by standing on strong music.
On June 2, 2008, Light Club was pleased to meet with broadcasters and senior staff of Radio Free Asia. They are also planning to play a Tibetan-organized show in July 2008. Clearly, the adventure continues for Light Club in the run up to the upcoming Summer Olympics.
Scott Berendt - His Way
Scott is an award-winning performer who has headlined at venues such as L.A.'s Whisky-a-Go-Go & House of Blues, Chicago's Excalibur, the MGM of Las Vegas, and Milwaukee's Summerfest.
He is known widely for his stage production, showmanship, range of styles, and collaborating with other talented musicians. His three albums, "Albion Moon," "Hoping for the Sun," and "Don't Look Back" convey his unique and eclectic sound that has earned him fame across the Midwest region of the United States.
As a drummer and a singer Scott has opened for Collective Soul, Eddie Money, Everclear, Ted Nugent, Pat Benatar, Vertical Horizon, Asia, and others. Scott has been touring for over 10 years and has studied the musical styles of Jazz, Fusion, Swing, Rock, Blues, and Reggae.
Jeff Saphin - Song to Save the World

His current collaborative endeavor âThe Eonsâ is with Earl Slick and delivers driving, edgy rock performances in an innovative, evocative and altogether seductive sonic and visual package ready for silver screens, TV, and arena stages alike.
His piece, âSong to Save the Worldâ was created after being asked by friend and fellow musician, Sterling Campbell, to perform at the Human Rights Torch Relay event held in New York City.
Freddy Clarke - Innocent Beauty in a Shimmering Gown
Born in Fresno, California, Freddy studied classical guitar at San Francisco State University with Rani Cochran and privately with Rey De La Torre and Leo Brower. He studied composition with Roger Nixon and Peter Sacco with an emphasis on form and technique.
Since then, Freddy has teamed with international musicians of various instruments and styles on a collaborative group known as Wobbly World. The band blends eclectic arrangements that incorporate sounds from Eastern & Western Hemispheres, including interesting blends of guitars, congo drums, violin, Bulgarian bagpipes, and a one-stringed Vietnamese Instrument known as the Dan Bau.
When asked to contribute a piece to the HRTR CD project, Freddy offered "Innocent Beauty in a Shimmering Gown." This instrumental work offers the listener a peaceful melody that can invoke a sense of harmony and inner peace.
KTâS Universal Love Band - Rising Sun
KTâs Universal Love Band was founded by Milwaukee Musician KT Rusch in 2006, with band members Chris Braun, Deon Sartin and Bocar Ndiaye. Their blend of original world music gets audiences dancing to uplifting and inspiring roots rhythms. The band is celebrated for their positive messages and their work with the youth of Milwaukee.
The song âRising Sunâ is dedicated to everyone working for positive changes within their communities and themselves. KT and family have been sponsors of an educational fund for Drepung Loseling, a Tibetan monastery in exile in south India. She visited the site shortly before the 2008 Tibetan uprisings. Universal Love has played at Human Rights Torch events in Milwaukee and Madison and recently sponsored a Rally for Compassion in Milwaukee.
The band draws inspiration from Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Laureate & Holocaust Survivor who wrote:
ââ¦because if to be free is the most important goal of all, then to help someone else to be or to become free must be the most sublime and rewarding of human endeavors.â
Their new CD, entitled âRising Sunâ, is available on i-Tunes and Rhapsody.
"Roots rhythmsâthat Iâll guarantee will stick in your head long after youâve listened to the CD..." NERVE HOUSE Review.
Yellow Express - We Want Freedom for the People
Yellow Expressâs music is best described as soulful pop/rock with some country-rock influences. Blending harmonious melodies and sophisticated lyrics, Yellow Express is unique with a style all their own.
Based in Sweden, the band performed during the Human Rights Torch Events in both Munich and Berlin for enthusiastic audiences.
They created and shared music out of a deep concern for the Chinese people, which have endured suppression at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). "
On their website reads a statement of their purpose as artful musicians, "The Chinese regime has weapons, money and propaganda tools. But we have our songs, our hearts and our firm determination to make a change!"
Randall and Sara Effner - Truth Shines Through
Randall and Sara Effner are a father-daughter team of folk singers/songwriters who have been performing and recording together since 2002. Through a combination of original music, photos, video, and news articles, their website depicts the noble spirit of Falun Gong as the practitioners peacefully resist the brutal persecution launched by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1999.
Randall Effnerâs song, âFeels Like 1936 Againâ received an âOutstanding Achievement in Songwriting Awardâ in the 9th Annual Great American Song Contest of 2007. Previously, in 2005, another original composition, âSet Them Free,â won an Honorable Mention Award in the same contest.
Universe326 â Eliminate the CCP
Universe326 is a Canadian indie rock band that was started by Justin Morgan in 2007. The band, hailing from Toronto, Canada, was formed primarily on the premise of raising awareness about human rights atrocities being committed worldwide with a focus on those happening in China.
Band members Justin Morgan, Dave Meek, Danny Ziegler & Adam Ainsworth felt there wasn't enough music raising awareness about the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong and so decided to create the track, "Quit the CCP".
To date the band has released a 15 song Debut LP entitled "Fields" as well as an 8 song EP entitled "Imaginary Word" and is currently working on their Sophomore LP "Factors in Fiction". For music and information on Universe326 please visit:
Sterling Campbell/Courtney Dowe (Feels Like 1936 Again)
Sterling Campbell is a native of New York City. Born May 3, 1964, Sterling began playing drums at the tender age of 11. In 1982, he graduated from the prestigious high school of Music and Art in Manhattan.
Sterling began his career on the local NY rock scene, playing drums in famed early 80âs rock clubs such as CBGBâs, The Ritz, and The Peppermint Lounge. He played in singer-songwriter bands, ska bands, fusion groups, and punk acts. In 1986, Sterling toured with Cyndi Lauper on her âTrue Colorsâ world tour.
In the 90âs Sterling was a member of Soul Asylum and then joined David Bowie. After many years apart, he reunited with Bowie to record his album, âReality,â and in 2003-2004 toured internationally with Bowie, covering seventeen countries over a ten-month period. In early 2007 Sterling returned to the B52âs for a new album and is currently on tour with them.
Courtney Dowe is a self-taught singer/song writer who has been playing across the US for over a decade. The Courtney Dowe Project is the latest sound child of the independent label Blackout Studios. Combining the amazing vocals of guitarist/songwriter Courtney Dowe with the music arrangement of producer/keyboardist James Collins (Founder of the group Fertile Ground), the unit is studiously in the lab working on a debut album (expected to be released later this year).
Leadvillejim - Flushing (a heart divine)
Leadvillejim is an acoustic songwriter/performer, living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. With a lifetime of experience writing and playing music, he began anew as a solo acoustic artist, exploring in song and lyric the spiritual and fundamental truths that bind our journey as humans. Deeply moved by the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, he performed at HRTR events in Denver and Santa Fe. His song "Flushing (a heart divine)" was inspired by recent events in May 2008, when Falun Gong practitioners were attacked in Flushing, N.Y., by a mob of angry Chinese - organized and funded by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Michael Feltz - Set Them Free
In 2004 Michael Feltz graduated from Clark University with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. While attending school, he taught himself chords & strumming patterns and learned how to sing and play songs for public performances at local open mics in the city of Worcester, Massachusetts.
After college Michael gained some experience playing music at public rallies and demonstrations in Boston. He became involved with raising awareness about victims of persecution under the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party and sought to use music as a means of promoting social change for China.
In 2007, he was a contestant at New Tang Dynasty Television's 1st International Chinese vocal competition and later that year was asked to perform at the Human Rights Torch Relay. After the 1st event held in Boston in March of 2008, Michael toured with the torch to perform at each of the New England states it visited. His dedication to this movement stems from a belief that, "All people, inside and outside of China alike, deserve to live without fear of oppression, persecution, or tyranny."
MARCUS GALE â One Torch
Marcus Gale, musician and human rights activist from North Berwick, Maine, is gaining attention for his song, âOne Torchâ written especially for the Human Rights Torch Relay, and performed at relay events throughout New England in the Spring of 2008. He has practiced Falun Gong since 1998, and has written many songs about the persecution of Falun Gong in China.
In October 2003 he received recognition from UNESCO/Comparative Human Rights Dept. at University of Connecticut during an international conference: âArtists in the Cause of Human Rightsâ. He has been interviewed on public radio and in print media about his personal experience with Falun Gong, the creation of his songs, and his journey from rural America to human rights advocacy on the world stage.
Marcus has a fulltime career performing a diverse mix of music, storytelling, and puppetry for children and their families. He has two very popular childrenâs recordings to his credit âSing Along, Laugh Alongâ and âSo Glad!â In the tradition of his favorite folk artists Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, Marcus uses the medium of music to raise awareness about social injustice and human rights abuses.
Tyen â Give Them Wings
With a variety of musical influences like rock, classical, hip hop, jazz, techno, world beat and more, Tyen began writing music for other musicians in the early 1980s, then producing music for film and other DJâs in the late 90s. Tyen later became actively involved with human rights and Tyen's music was featured in the movie âSand Stormâ.
Tyenâs goal is to capture the moments of certain happenings in our world through musical communications. Tyen encourages people to reach far beyond this plane into the world of universal sound. When donating a track to the Human Rights Torch CD project, Tyen chose âGive Them Wingsâ so the good people of China suffering under persecution could have hope to fly above oppression, and realize they are not alone. Tyenâs next CD project is called âInner Kingdomâ, which will be a journey of ancient Chinese melodies and natural soundscapes.
