Joanne Rand''s seventh independently produced album, Into the River, a tour de force of songwriting, musical prowess and grit.

West Coast singing-songwriting phenomenon reaching entire nation with powerful and personal examinations of family, love, fear, faith and the tragedy of September 11.

Nearly 15 years after releasing her first album, Home, Joanne Rand has come forward with Into the River, a songwriting tour de force that sets the bar for the new millennium''s musical examinations of family, love, fear, faith and the tragedy of September 11, 2001. With sirenic voice and a mastery of guitar and piano, and a treasure trove of talented backup musicians, Rand takes listeners on a buoyant and rhythmic musical journey that keeps us on our toes, always moving, changing, breathing, dancing, ultimately leaving us with hope and joy.

A noted West Coast performer, born and raised a Southerner and referred to by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat as "nothing short of brilliant," Rand has again proven herself one of the nation''s finest songwriters. Co-produced and recorded by Stephen Hart (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Bonnie Raitt) at the historic Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, Into the River evokes passion, empathy and introspection in a sound all its own.
"Into the River is all about diving from the head into the heart." says Rand.

On the first track, "Jumpstart," Rand looks back on her ascending career with disarming candor and a bit of tongue-in-cheek: "I want to be a miracle like lightning scorches earth/I want to leave some kind of work behind for what it''s worth/A wildfire burns all night/But I might not be that bright ... Might not have the lungs or legs for the part." Yet on "Not a Fighter" Rand is that bright and more, addressing basic human values: "I want to live in a world where I''m not afraid to raise my little girl/I want to live in a world without anthrax and missiles and nuclear meltdowns/I want to live in a world without suicide bombers/I want to live in a world without high rise mania/Where love is life and life is love/I want to be a lover/Don''t want to be a fighter."

On the title cut, "Into the River," Rand again encourages us to make our way through such a world by throwing ourselves fully into life: "Dive in/The river is yours/The river is now, river of life/Dive in: the starry skies, the tumbling waters of life/River of love, river of life/River of you pumping hearts blood through/Cast your seed into the river, soon it will carry you home."

The music on Into the River is compelling and full, backed by Rand''s longtime drummer Jack Springett, bassist Robyn Sylvester (Vince Welnick/Missing Man Formation, Mark Cohen), violinist Jim Hurley (Queen Ida, Dan Hicks, Ancient Future), guitarist Tony Khalife of Santa Cruz, and Portland''s Jason Montgomery on slide guitars.

Once upon a time a pigtailed kid with a big stick stood on a Georgia Mountaintop, singing the birds right out of the trees. At sixteen she began a big zigzag all over this country and beyond: Florida, London, Chicago, Santa Fe, Alaska, the Amazon. Then she hit the Pacific Northwest and a certain wild river captured her heart.

To this river is dedicated Joanne Rand''s seventh self-produced album. Into the River is all about claiming your life, diving from the head into the heart. "Dive in! The river is yours, the river is now, river of life." In an age of uncertainty, Rand evokes the human values of love, compassion and courage.

During the late 1980s this same river gave Rand the guts to come out as a radical singer songwriter, capturing hearts throughout the US. "Joanne Rand''s singing raises your hair - elegance and fierceness in the same deep breath." -Gary Snyder. "Her singing inspires praise usually reserved for healers and saints" - Santa Cruz Good Times 2002. She has been performing internationally and recording ever since, weaving her life into her work: from the loss of her brother to AIDS (songwriter, Jordan Rand, whose songs grace her albums), to the birth of her daughter, Georgia. Rand, whose style has been dubbed Psychedelic-Folk-Revival and Acoustic Ritual spins songs of transformation and grassroots power. From audiences of 60,000 to personal appearances for hospice patients, weddings and birthing mothers, Rand moves hearts along a wide spectrum of human existence.

With roots in classical piano, gospel and the politico-folk-rock music of her youth, Rand''s career has included performances with Bonnie Raitt, Richie Havens, Janis Ian and members of the former Grateful Dead. During the 1990s Rand anchored Seattle''s hometown music scene. At the same time Rand''s quartet was voted Best Acoustic Band in Sonoma County by a California reader''s poll. With the release of her latest CD, Rand is returning to claim as home the wild river that has fed her soul for almost twenty years and the wildness that sparked her as a kid on a mountaintop.
