Details:
Troy started playing guitar at the age of 14 in Tucson, Arizona, but as a small child before this, while growing up in Dennison, Ohio, he would lay on the floor at his mother''s feet as she would play the piano. At the age of 8 he began playing the snare drum for the elementary school band then his interest would lead to the guitar. When Troy started playing guitar his influences at the time were Rush, Deep Purple, Kiss, and AC/DC. His music became his passion and he spent hours learning the hip guitar licks of that time.
In high school Troy wanted to take his passion to school with him, so he auditioned for the high school jazz band. Many of his musical friends were in jazz band, but Troy would have a tough time becoming a member of the jazz band. He could not read music. He only played by ear. A guitar friend of his knew the audition song and taught it to Troy before the audition. He was accepted into the high school jazz band. Later that school year, Troy would win “Outstanding Guitar Soloist” at the Arizona High School State Jazz Band Competition.
Through the rest of high school and there after, Troy played lead guitar in a number of rock bands even fronting a band on vocals and playing bass in others. He appeared on some recordings with these bands in the late 80''s and early 90''s. In 1993 Troy moved to Vail, Colorado where he found that rock, especially heavy metal, was not as popular as it was in Tucson. So Troy decided to try and learn classical guitar. He would buy classical guitar CD''s at the local music store and sit for hours trying to piece together classical guitar pieces by ear. One day while browsing CD''s at the store, he came upon a CD with a long haired guitarist on the cover. He took it home only to discover a new genre of music. That guitarist''s name was Ottmar Liebert.
For 2 years Troy locked himself in his bedroom learning this new genre called Nouveau Flamenco guitar. He threw away his guitar picks and grew his fingernails and started perfecting fast guitar runs. He started performing in the Vail, Colorado area and developed a following. In 2000 Troy released a demo CD entitled “Mountain Flamenco” and the song “Gypsy Dance” became a very popular song on https://www.tradebit.com. In 2005 Troy teamed up with percussionist Dexter Wiggins and released a live CD entitled “Live in Frisco, Co” followed by their first studio recording together “A New Beginning” in 2007. Troy''s first solo studio CD “Troy Gray” is expected to be released in July 2008.
