Julian Garner is a UK singer, guitarist, keyboard player, songwriter and arranger who records albums of original music, and performs acoustic versions of the songs on guitar. October 2004 saw his most significant album release to date, Your Good Self. This 56-minute, 11-song, glass mastered CD is available from the CDBaby website. Song clips are available here, too, while on Julian's own site at https://www.tradebit.com you will find some of the lyrics, as well as a lot more information about the new album (including reviews) and the rest of the Julian Garner story so far.
It was in 1999 that the guitar became Julian's main instrument. He'd learnt the violin growing up in a family steeped in orchestral and chamber music, before going on to spend eight eventful years as a keyboard player on the London rock circuit in various bands he co-founded. Eventually he became the singer and main songwriter in the band Rook, fronting a live TV performance. After spending time as a songwriter in collaboration with various lyricists, he recorded the mainly self-written solo albums Wake The Lion in 1999 and Doublethink in 2001. Many of the songs on his albums can now be heard in his performances in the UK. These also feature songs like Pink Floyd's Money, Sparks' This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us, Police's I Can't Stand Losing You and Beach Boys' God Only Knows, as well as versions of less well-known pieces of classic songwriting such as Jellyfish's Glutton of Sympathy and XTC's Dear God.
Influences are wide-ranging and his style is distinctive, ever-evolving and not easy to define. His work has been compared to that of artists such as Sting, Yes, It Bites, Paul McCartney, Joe Jackson, XTC, Genesis, Ben Folds Five, Jellyfish and Squeeze. He is as likely to record an epic classic rock soundscape with big choral harmonies as he is to perform an exposed vocal with fingerstyle guitar accompaniment. While the songs tend to be driven by melody and rhythm, repeated listening will reveal plenty of musical surprises, thanks to his trademark blending of pop/rock song structures with progressive rock arrangements and instrumental sections. It's the sort of music that appeals to those who like to hear keyboards and unusual chord sequences play a full role alongside drums, bass, guitar and vocals.
2004 is Julian's most active year so far, with his first regular solo performances and the long-awaited release of Your Good Self, with its 12-minute title track, carefully constructed lyrics and arrangements, big vocal harmonies and more extensive use of rock and acoustic guitars and stereo recording techniques than on previous releases.
Julian also composes for the classical guitar, performing a mixture of his own pieces and Spanish guitar repertoire, and teaches classical and acoustic guitar. He lives in Dorset (southern England) with his wife, Elaine. His ambition is simply to continue to write and perform music to the best of his ability.
