Meet Trish and Richard.
Strikingly exceptional songwriters, musicians and leaders in their own right, Trish and Richard Bruxvoort Colligan join hands as The Riverâs Voice. Their unique fusion in music, life, and love brings to the world a never-ending flow of inspired gifts. Known for their depth of wisdom, playful spirits, and fully engaged presence, you might say they are quite the pair.
The couple tours as professional musicians, songwriters and retreat leaders, bringing with them their passion for the human journey and the mystery of the spiritual life. Together with their son Sam, they live in an 1880s era house in the hills of Strawberry Point, Iowa with each other, three crazy cats, and a sweet, grandmotherly dog.
Musically, Trish's piano and Richard's acoustic guitar lend a folk-influenced backdrop to their smooth vocal harmonies. Think James Taylor and Sarah McLaughlin, and youâre close.
A River's Voice concert is full of stories, laughter, and music for young and old. Riverâs Voice retreats and workshops are sometimes playful, sometimes contemplative, integrating mind, body and spirit. In music and in leadership, Trish and Richard bring a quality of wonder, gratitude and reverence for what's alive and awakening.
The duo has published over a dozen CDs between them over the past ten years.
The marriage of Trish and Richard Bruxvoort Colligan is more than just that of a husband and wife. It is the union of two adventuring souls inspired to create music that nourishes the spirit, promotes true vision, and reveals grace within the listener.
Their collective voice is simultaneously powerful and gentle, with songs that rise from the wellspring of their passion for the human journey and the mystery of the spiritual life. The values of compassion, wisdom and beauty are more than just fancy little things to sing about; they are the very ground from which their lives and art take root.
Partners in life, love and all things creative, Trish and Richard bring their individual tastes and flavors to the soup pot of their unique blend. Here they welcome in a third, unnamed but equally vital essence that stirs up their presence in to a single, harmonious force of goodness and nourishment for all.
Come in. Sit at the table and feast. If you listen, you just might find theyâre singing your song.
In Trish Bruxvoort Colligan is a one-of-a-kind fusion of spunk, open-heartedness, and compassion. She brings her passion for story and eagerness for people to know their lives as sacred art. Growing up in a home infused with music, she recognized early on the power of the human voice, as she felt the vibrations of her fatherâs booming bass voice resonate through the Sunday morning pews. Both her mother and her father played piano and organ, and when Trish came home and tried to plunk out her kindergarten class songs, she was whisked into piano lessons herself. Though she wishes now that sheâd stuck with it, she loathed the lessons and soon quit to return to her preferred playing-by-ear style. In fifth grade, Trish wrote her first song while walking beans in her grandfatherâs Iowa soybean fields, and had her first live performance in front of an audience in the 7th grade; sheâs been writing and performing her own music ever since.
Music drew Trish and Richard together, and it seemed only natural that the two should continue doing what they love best. Trishâs deep heart and introspective nature with her colorful and spontaneous personality bring light and joy to the music of Riverâs Voice. Trish relishes her role of Mama to 7-year-old Sam, and particularly enjoys sleepytime snuggles and tickle-fests. And while she does loves to laugh, Richard's on-stage jokes may never get much more than a loving groan from her.
In her solo music work focused in womenâs spirituality, Trish creates songs and chants that accompany groups and individuals in spiritual exploration, and offers invitations to laughter, healing and wholeness. Her love of poetry (check out Mary Oliver, Rumi, Hafiz, David Whyte, John OâDonohue, and Marge Piercy, to name a few) is a faithful presence in her writing, supplying wells of inspiration and winding its way into strands of lyric.
In addition to her music, Trish is the Founding Director of Spirations Institute for Interspiritual Formation, a two-year, interspiritual spiritual direction program for women. In her private Story Midwife practice, she specializes in sacred ritual, one-on-one holy listening, and retreats for women: https://www.tradebit.com.
Richard makes his way in the world as one with Christian roots whose Masters of Arts studies in Theology and the Arts at United Theological Seminary in Minneapolis has provided him with an even greater appreciation of his spiritual path. Add to that his lifelong love and exploration of music and language and one can imagine the synergy of songcrafting and the spiritual life that emanates and emerges from him. As both a musical and a technical talent, Richard is the master behind all of the Riverâs Voice recordings, making magic in the studio overlooking the lush, hilly sheep pastures and farm fields behind the couplesâ home.
Richardâs musical compositions range from the intimate and deeply personal songs that he performs with the Riverâs Voice; to the inspirational and uplifting hymns, chants, liturgies and worship music that he writes and records for congregational and group settings.
Some of Richardâs favorite things include blue, autumn, James Taylor, dumb jokes, sleep, chocolate, Star Trek TNG, Zen koans, The Tick, and sky. As a daddy, Richard frolics with their young son Sam â a full-hearted lover of the world specializing in reading, lego engineering, singing, jokes, and all manner of outdoor play.
Richardâs gentle, centered, and graceful manner brings an intent deeply rooted in kindness and love to the music of the Riverâs Voice. To learn more about his other projects, visit https://www.tradebit.com and The Psalm Project at https://www.tradebit.com.
About the Name - The River's Voice:
We love water.
An ancient and sacred symbol for Abundant Life, water represents power, healing, and the divine presence. It creates an oasis in the desert, washes away defilements, anoints, baptizes, heals, and rejuvenates.
A river is a body of water that represents a journey, a fine symbolization of the spiritual life: flowing, swirling, never standing still, and ever unfolding in effortless grace toward its final destination. Along its winding way, the river wholeheartedly offers its abundance to anyone in its midst âthose who are thirsty, who require cleansing, or who seek relief from the heat of the day. The beauty of both river and spiritual life is their earthy, holy sustenance for everything and everyone with whom they come in contact.
Just as a river is never the same from one moment to the next, neither are we as humans. Each person is constantly changing and experiencing the world in new ways. Giving another person the freedom to fully live their journey is as important as what we do on our own.
This journey, this river of spirit is what comes through in the music of the Riverâs Voice. The voices that sing are not just creating song, but at once instruments by which the song is given life. Through their recordings, concerts and even simple conversation, Richard and Trish bring their experiences and journeys, and invite you to celebrate yours.
Q&A with Trish and Richard:
Pull up your chair, grab a cup and let's chat. We'll do our best to answer your burning questions. If others arise you can always email us and check back here for our answer.
*Did you meet through music?
Yep, we met on a hot and sticky Iowa August day when Richard was hired to record Trishâs first CD (Sacred Passages, no longer in print). Trish had just been hired as the off-site musician for a year-long camp and retreat center in Okoboji, Iowa, and one of the job perks was to make a record of her own compositions. Richard was the guy they hired for the job. Though we worked together in musical arenas from that point on, it was a few years of our own winding life journeys and adventures before we came to be a couple.
*Did you really put your couch in the middle of a major highway for a photo shoot?
Why, yes we did. We also placed it in the midst of a sheep pasture in our backyard. And yes, the sheep are real. (Note the sheep pie in this photo's lower right corner. Authentic.)
*Whatâs a Riverâs Voice concert like?
Weâre hilarious. You should see our break dancing segment and bottle juggling act.
Well..., not really.
One might think of a concert as purely entertainment. But although weâre notorious for letting slip a dumb joke or
two (one of Richardâs specialties), you wonât find us up there doing a pull-out-all-the-stops dog and pony show solely for your approval or applause. You get Us: Trish and Richard who are real-life, true-to-what-you-see folks. We love to sing for adults and intergenerational/family groups that are really ready to listen and go on a journey with us. This means you're not likely to find us playing at your cousinâs wedding dance or your daughterâs middle school lock-in.
Envision this: an evening full of friendship, with moments of thoughtfulness and laughter. Itâs a special time set apart, and you feel that these songs are for you â itâs your song weâre singing. Held in a venue any size, from a stadium to your living room, we weave together moments of stillness and intimacy and listening with laughter and the all-out chorus of group singing. At the close, each unique person present takes away the sense that this time together has touched and spoken to the wonders and concerns of all whoâve gathered. And youâll know that we have enjoyed you as much as youâve enjoyed us. What could be better?
*I hear you do retreats. What are they like?
Yes, this is one of our specialties! Often weâre invited to lead entirely one-day, multi-day or weekend retreats â music, programming, workshops, the whole gamut. Sometimes weâre asked to design a retreat using a theme of our own choosing, or dovetail with one already selected. Our style is contemplative and interactive with a body-mind-spirit approach, and plenty of space for solitude, reflection and self-expression. Some of our favorite themes:
⢠Spiritual Practices
⢠Chanting and Drumming
⢠Worship and the Arts
⢠Meditation and Contemplative Prayer
⢠Exploring Music, Vibration and Sound in Healing and Prayer
⢠Marriage and Partnership: Relationship as Spiritual Practice
⢠Children and Family Spirituality
⢠The Spirituality of Healing
⢠The Sacred Ordinary
Retreat groups may consist of adults, college students, families, or intergenerational folks. Weâve served couples, clergy, cancer survivors, leadership teams, foster children, and menâs and womenâs groups for retreat centers, not-for-profits, churches and spiritual communities of all faiths, traditions and denominations. Retreats often take place at a retreat center, though sometimes in churches, community centers, bed and breakfasts or inns.
*Do you do conferences or larger events, too?
Yes. Conference and event facilitators often hire us alongside other gifted and vibrant leaders. Our presence and leadership through music act as catalysts for group cohesiveness, creativity, and awakening to new possibilities. When conference leaders want to demonstrate something other than the usual disjointed comings and goings, awkward multi-media transitions and abrupt dead space, or the rigorous stampede of anxiously-introduced speakers, we are invited onto the team.
As one speaker exits, we are at the ready to invite the assembly to a deep breath; to a moment of reflection; to the gift of a song. In this, a unified focus is invited, and the wisdom and information set forth by each presenter may deepen and settle more fully in individuals and community alike. Likewise, as a group gathers or exits, our music is in place to welcome and set the tone, or send them forth dancing into the world. In these settings, weâre often told that we bring the Heart to support the workings of the Head. When Head and Heart are aligned and in working balance, the journey is much grander and its outcome more extraordinary.
We may also be called upon for workshop facilitation, spiritual mentoring, and designing and leading multi-sensory worship in multiple styles and settings. In nearly all cases, a Riverâs Voice concert is a big draw on the schedule of events.
*How far and where do you travel?
As far and wide and as close to home as needed to get there. (Hey New Zealand! Hey Austrailia! Hey Ireland! How about a gig over in your part of the globe?)
*Would you come to my neck of the woods to do a concert or retreat?
We might â for a stack of Oreos (for Richard) and a fabulous Mexican dinner (for Trish).
In actuality, weâre traveling less these days as Trishâs main gig is the Founding Director of Spirations; and Richardâs focus is liturgical writing, publishing and consultation through his business https://www.tradebit.com, and for Augsburg Fortress Publishing in their joint Psalm Project venture; heâs also the music and worship guy at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
However, we do still accept a handful of invitations each year, and select only those events that we can passionately and whole-heartedly give ourselves and our gifts to.
*How do I find out if youâre available for our event?
Simply be in touch. Email us or reach us through the CONTACT page on this website.
*Is Richard one of the guys from that 90's rock band Sojourn?
One and the same! And still as cute as ever.
