ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: Progressive Rock
Industry veterans are praising Kirsten Davies' performance bravado as "some of the strongest, starkest vocal delivery since Ann Wilson." Entrenched in the diverse Nashville music scene, this fiery Artist has been traveling North America on guest appearances, songwriting with fellow artists for cuts in multiple genres, and gracing the stages and studios of New York, Nashville, and LA. Now, armed with her debut release Unseen, Kirsten Davies is on the verge of wide-spread notoriety.
Unseen features 11 original tracks that boldly venture into vast thematic landscapes: from the sobering plight of women in wartime on "Lay Down, Lorinda" to the hard-hitting reality of the spiritual realm on the title track, from the raw heart-wrenching of love betrayed in "Haven't We," to the bitter tale of innocence lost in "On the Rocks."
Critics claim, "in a sea of musical mediocrity, her voice and songs are both captivating and unique." And producers and engineers she has worked with say, "her voice is so strong, it would record without a mic!"
"I really want to SAY something in the songs I write and perform," comments the Canadian/U.S. dual citizen. "It's not enough for me to have a nice voice or to sing pleasant, ear-tickling songs. I'm a very passionate person, I'm very opinionated, and I usually have an axe to grind about something. Songwriting and performing is a way for me to make people see what I see, feel what I feel...whether they agree with me is not the issue."
Kirsten has performed since the tender age of 5, and has spent many consecutive months on the road touring Northern America and Europe. These experiences have created an old-soul undercurrent in her music, a river fed by an early exposure to the rhythms and melodies of classic rock, the emotion of dramatic theatre, and the hooks of radio (which was sometimes her only connection to America while she was raised overseas).
"Unseen has been a long time in the making," she comments. "Although I love writing with other artists for their projects, there is a constant well-spring of emotions and topics that not everyone wants to sing about. And that's ok...I have just always wanted more from music-more than always writing for other people, more than what mainstream radio may deem acceptable for the masses to hear. That's where this project comes in. I have cut my teeth writing-wise with some major players in the mecca of songwriting (Nashville) and now I'm ready for people to hear my voice, my way, my writing. It's a natural progression for me to have sung all these years, to now feel more confident than ever in my writing skills, and to jump, full-force, into the big waters. I released a self-titled EP in LA, but this is the first project I feel really looks and sounds like me."
The album, self-produced by Kirsten, was recorded in Nashville over a series of four, day-long sessions with members of her own band, including Jim Bloodgood (drums, loops), Casey Pollack (guitars), Robby Wilson (bass, moog) and Jonathon Long (B3, piano) and also features contributions by Adam Schoenfeld (guitars), Matt Evans (bass) and Erik Halbig (guitars). Mixed by Grammy-winner David Z (Etta James, Big Head Todd, Prince, Jonny Lang), the album has a through-line of driving guitars, soaring melodies, and undeniable, radio-ready hooks.
Kirsten has traveled the world and seen much, both good and bad, in the faces of people, politics, and religion. If anything, that upbringing serves as the landscape for her paradigm. Raised as the daughter of missionary parents, she had an early exposure to the bitter-sweet realities of life: the innate beauty and utter poverty in foreign cultures, the soul-strengthening inspiration and man-made hypocrisy of organized religion, and the sweet solitude and utter isolation of being raised in a manner unlike any of her peers.
"I am beautifully complex," she says with a knowing grin. The artist, who holds a degree in International Politics, worked for the US government in Washington, D.C., studied at the International Institute for Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, and had a stint as an international flight attendant, is guarded at the same time that she puts her heart on her sleeve. "I'm not sure the music industry is ready for me. But I sense the public is ready for songs that have meat to them, that really mean something. I'm just wanting to be a part of that movement, of that passion and power that is naturally resident in music."
"Scream (Mirror, Mirror)" echoes the daily battle of outward perfection versus inner turmoil, while "Raining in L.A." is haunted with images of the invisible realities of the Eye-Candy Capitol of man-made beauty. "Twist the Knife" is a radio-ready, looking glass view into a deceitful relationship, and "Cry" is a heartfelt plea for a friend to grieve her lost love and move on in life.
Co-written by the likes of New York's Terence Dover (past credits include Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton), Unseen is set to be a groundbreaking independent release by this up-and-coming rock artist. After guest appearances in Jacksonville, FL, at the annual Super Bowl activities, and production and promotional trips to NYC and L.A., Kirsten is scheduled to travel to London with the completed project in pursuit of European distribution, a move she hopes will bring her closer to her roots.
"I have a very international view of life, and I want to keep it that way. Sure, a landmark break into the American music market would be envious. There isn't an artist alive who doesn't secretly crave that. The challenge comes in finding a balance between marketability, integrity of content, and longevity. That's what I'm after... I want it all," remarks the red head.
And if she has anything to say about it, she will have it all. Strong women are a rare breed of beauty. Kirsten Davies is one passionate, opinionated, talented woman you don't want to miss knowing.
